Missing a dear companion

Hello everyone,

I prefer to give upbeat news but we have a bunch of broken hearts at our house, including the cat's and I just wanted to share. Our 15 year old terrier was put to sleep in our home a couple of days ago. It was time and we know she was more comfortable this way. She was a wonderful dog, sweet but also full of spirit as terriers are. I thought I was doing okay but it has hit me hard since I went to pick up her cremains.

I have spent a lot more time at home since my surgeries which was much to her delight. The many months that I couldn't bear weight I had to go up and down the stairs by doing a kind of seated tricep lift and there she was....going up or down with me step by step. She about drove me nuts in the kitchen, always underfoot, waiting for food to fall from the sky as it inevitably does when cooking. God, I miss her....

Thanks

I totally understand. We lost 3 old cats right in a row, 3 yrs ago to chronic illness, and I find myself still thinking and grieving about them.

When I feel really sad about them now, I just look at some photos I have of them in their prime and think about the good times. Having the capacity to love and cherish a pet, means having the painful grief when they leave. You can't have one without the other.

It is tough losing a pet, it leaves an empty spot in the home, or yard or pasture..

Littlepaw, you have my sympathy.

Losing a much-loved pet is never an easy thing.

Please be extra-gentle with yourself over the next while.

That's really sad. I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry. It's so hard to lose a pet. They're family, too.

It sounds like your dog led a very happy and comfortable life. I'm happy when the time came you did the compassionate thing and gave him the best last gift.

Thanks everyone for the sympathy and kind words. I am feeling so tender right now. I had forgotten how hard this is. It's been many years since I lost a pet (besides hamsters). She did have a good run and a good life but it's just not easy losing them at anytime.

I am amazed at how empty the house seems without her. She was a small dog but had so much personality and enthusiasm for life. Even though she was run down by heart failure recently she still had presence. I know it will take time to get used to. They bring so much Love don't they?

It is a lovely day here and I am going to go sit out in the sun. She always liked that.

I feel your pain. :(

Thanks again, everyone. It really is helpful just to let people know what you're going through. I appreciate the sympathy and support.

I am feeling more settled today. I played piano and got myself outside yesterday. I am fortunate to have a quarry lake near me that has kayaks. So I got on the water and gently glided around for a long time reflecting and watching the turtles, fish and cormorants. Very peaceful and restorative.
