does anybody else have heart valve problems??
hey all,
I just found out a very disturbing fact about my heart....I have a moderate aortic valve regurgitation!!!! I also have mitral valve prolapse, but have had the mitral valve issues since I was 18 but to now find out about the aortic valve is a shock to say the least. here is some info on the disorder....another bloody thing I have to worry about and did my meds do this? what is the cause??? I'll likely never know. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/aor...CTION=symptoms I found out about the issue because I went to the cardiologist to have my mitral valve assessed for it's status.....and then get this news!!! I now have to go the the cardiologist every 2 years for the rest of my life to have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to make sure my heart is ok and that I don't need a valve replacement..ahhhhhhh:eek::eek::eek: the horror!!!! Do any of you have these issues??? thanks for listening to me whine!!! love and hugs, Victoria:hug::hug: |
It does sound scary and I'm not surprised that it has you worried, but mitral valve incometence is actually rather common.
It's not until it causes problems like severe fatigue, or shortness of breath, or palpitations or other similar "heart" type symptoms, that most people even find out they have any valve problems of this type. My own daughter has mitral valve incompetence, and it's picked up as a heart murmur by every new doctor she ever goes to. She was born with her's 31 years ago, and it's quite benign....having never caused her any problems at all. If severe problems were to arise, the mitral valve can actually be replaced. They tend to use either a mechanical valve, or a pig's valve as these tend to have a much higher success rate than other types of replacement valves. If you were to need a valve replaced, it's fairly straight forward surgery and most people only stay in hospital for 4 or 5 days. I hope that helps to alleviate any immediate worries, but don't forget that your doctor should answer any questions you might have. If you're not happy with the answers that you are getting, ask for a referral to a heart specialist. That way you can have what's known as an echo cardiograph done. Echo cardiograms show whether or not the valve is causing any major problems with your cardiac function. |
hi
thanks for your reply.
I am a nurse and understand all of that i have had the mvp for over 15 years now and it is not that that I am concerned about. It has never been a problem for me. It is the aortic valve issue that can cause all the problems and it is moderate not mild regurge that is the issue at hand here. i am concerned about the future of my health as I am unable to work out to keep my heart in shape! I do appreciate your post thanks love and hugs, Victoria |
I'm so sorry, but I seem to read your post with my mind on the mitral valve and completely overlooked the aortic valve....the most important one. It was late at night when I answered your thread....please forgive me.
I understand how you'd be concerned. ...especially about your LV function, and possible hypertrophy of the left ventricle. It would be distressing for you having the medical knowledge that you have, and not knowing what caused your condition. I hope that you remain well, and that no further intervention will be needed. |
what?
Victoria,
I just saw this. Why is it TOS brings out so many other conditions.? If you have had MVP for 15 years is the aortic condition related? I know regurgitation is common for all but know not much as you. You just need to get out of Canada for some summer like California weather to bask in. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! |
Victoria- i just read this.... I'm sorry!! its not whining ever, but especially when its your freakin aortic valve!! I hope that your docs keep on top of this!
