Possible Symptom or just worrying

Hi Everyone,

A little history . . . Two years ago went to neuo because of tingling (sometimes intense but no pain) on right side of face. Brain MRI without contrast was clear. Last month my left arm felt like it had a sunburn and was numb. My left hand/arm had the wrong perception of temperature. My left leg now falls asleep frequently when I stand up shooting a tingling sensation through my torso and then a burning in my right hip or down right leg. I also have had L'Hermittes sign most of the time for two weeks. GP ordered blood test and B12 was 158. She started me on B12 shots but when symptoms got worse sent me to neuro. Had Spine MRI last week and go to neuro on Wed. GP talked to me to get prepared in case it was MS.

Question: My stomach feels like someone is pushing on it. It is from the top of my stomach. I thought it was indigestion but it is pressure from the outside. It doesn't really hurt it is just constant pressure at different times during the day. Has anyone had a similar symptom or is it just stress?

The pressure sounds like what we refer to as the "MS Hug". Here is a link to a website that explains about it: http://ms.about.com/od/signssymptoms/a/ms_hug_pain.htm

Was your last MRI done with contrast? I think your MRI should be done with contrast so that any lesions that are active will show up. Have you had an LP done? Some refer to an LP as a spinal tap.

So many conditions mimic MS - and sometimes it's a process of elimination to get to a diagnosis. Keep a diary of your symptoms, when you have them and how long they last. This way you'll be able to give your Neuro accurate information.

Nice to meet you.

Thanks Kitty and Sally!

I appreciate the link. Yes the latest MRI was with contrast. It is nice to be able to share what I am going through and get advice. I felt silly going to the doctor because nothing really hurts or if it does it isn't very long. My neuro asked what was the worst symptom so we could start with doing something about that. I told him the worst part is just that it is happening. I will give an update when I know more.

Thanks again!!

When you said the thing about not feeling the right temp, that struck a note with me.

In Nov '03, I could not feel how cold a drink was in my hands. I had been having a pain in my left hip, shock down that leg. I had a T spine MRI w/comtrast in December, and in Jan the results came back.

Everything normal except I had a syrinx from T 5 to T 8 - syringomyelia. I had never heard of it till I was dx'd. Some sx are really similar - the hug, the shocks, the temp. spasms, pain. similar but a little different.

It's far less common than ms, but I would still keep pushing your doc for more tests. I would not go in to him and say "Gee I think I may have SM." He'll look at ya like you're nuts. They look at me like I'm nuts whe I tell them I have it, lol, cuz a lot of them have never seen a person with it. Just so you know.

But do keep looking for answers, tell your doc, something isn't right, let's keep testing till we find it.

I burned myself a lot at first till I got used to not sensing heat, and until some of that sense was more normal. But I still have to use my elbows and knees to test the shower, and all my parts feel that water as different.

I still should not lift a lot. My hands get seriously tingly if I move more than 20 lbs. Do too much and my feet go tingly too.

Not that I think you have this... just saying, there are lots of things it could be. So many things so alike. don't just figure it's ms and not look for other things as well, okay? Good luck.

You should check out this site http://www.pernicious-anaemia-society.org/ One of the biggest signs/symptom of pernicious aneamia is upper stomach pain.

You too can contact your local National MS Society Chapter and ask them for highly thought of neurologists in your area.

Take care.
