Painful Carotid Ultrasound

I had a painful carotid ultrasound today. They aren't supposed to hurt but this caused pressure and pain in my ear, my teeth, and the side of my neck plus the back of my head hurt. For a little while there was mild tingling inside my cheek. I called the doc - his assistant said that they had never heard of anyone complain before. I've had other ultrasounds before but they didn't hurt. Something must have gone wrong - anyway, no one is talking so far.

I just saw your other post.

This test definitely should NOT have hurt. It sounds like the person that was doing the test might have been 'in training'. They're supposed to use very gentle pressure when doing this test. Sounds like that wasn't the case.

Make sure you stay in touch with your doctor. You've probably just been bruised from too aggressive treatment.

If you can find out the name of the supervisor of the person who actually did the ultrasound, I would file a written complaint with the supervisor. You want to make sure that this person doesn't do this to anyone else. Sounds like they need more training.

Hugs. I hope a good night's sleep makes all the discomfort go away.

Hi Midge. I haven't seen your other posts but wanted to say something about your ultrasound. I don't know specific circumstances for you.

I had a carotid ultrasound because my GP was concerned I may have a blockage because of the pain I was having in my neck. Well, the ultrasound was painful for me. Hurt my ear, my neck, my jaw.

But as it turned out, that was all because the pain was from TMJ! The ultrasound didn't show any blockage. Well, some, but normal for my age I guess.

I hope you come back to tell the results of the test.
