need stats on avg clinical trial costs

I am wondering if anyone has any idea where i can find stats on the average costs of Phase I-IV clinical trials- could be per patient or overall.

need current stats as well as historical (need to be able to at least try to come up with a ballpark estimate for, say, a phase II trial that lasted from 1993 to 2001.

if anyone has any suggestions, i am all ears.

This is just one of the first sources on google but it is similar to what I hear by word of mouth. I'd check further tho.

It is creeping up to a billion dollars to develop a drug, half of which can go to clinical trials. In 2000 it was 802 million to develop one, according to this source on cancer drugs. It has to be much more now.

So, you could be looking at approx. half a billion dollars.

Report cites high patient costs in drug trials

The average per-patient cost of clinical trials ranges from roughly $5,500 at Phase I to $7,600 in Phase III, according to a recent study by pharmaceutical
market research company, Cutting Edge Information (Research Triangle Park,
North Carolina). The report states that a drug company spends an
average of 37% of its overall R&D budget on clinical affairs.

Cutting Edge said that some of the companies it surveyed have 2004 clinical
affairs budgets exceeding $400 million.

It said that clinical affairs executives rank patient recruitment as the No. 1 area where the industry can accelerate clinical trials, which on average, consumes 30% of the overall clinical trial process.

thank you, paula and carolyn - will explore further. probem is the numbers i am getting from differing sources are SOOOO differing, and for similar time periods.

I have been involved in arranging clinical trials and obtaining cost estimates.

The costs have ranged from $500 to $40,000 per patient.

So if you're looking for the average this really doesn't answer your question as the difference is so great.

Clinical trial numbers differ enormously as well. The number of patients required to get a licence for a new medicine range from 25 to 4,500.

tufts somehow came up with the number $800 million to bring a new drug to market, and that involves clinical trials - so it is possible to use averages or *something* to come up with ballpark estimates. maybe i should look up that study...

For most of the trials i am looking at, i have the number of patients.
