Gestational diabetes
My youngest daughter (age 30) is preggo with child #2. Her doc said he was going to make sure this pregnancy didn't go the full 40 weeks, because her last baby "got stuck" and had a difficult time getting thru the birth canal. The little guy was less than 8 lbs. and my daughter is not a teensy-tiny person.
The doc's office called and told her last Monday that she had gestational diabetes. Now she is bummed because she knows the baby will be larger, and she'll have to have a c-section. My question is this: do any of you mothers out there have experience with this, and did the diabetes stay after delivery? Or did you get Type 2 Diabetes later in life? Also, what effect did it have on the baby? The info I've read says that some babies develop Type 2 diabetes later on in life. Please tell me what you know! Oh, and FYI, diabetes doesn't run in my family, but BIG babies do! |

external size doesnt always correlate to internal size, she may be "small" in her internal dimensions...how preggo is she? |
At the rate things are going in this country... 1/2 of the country will be diabetic in 20 yrs!
Hard to say about the baby... but Mom's chances are higher for type II. I have diabetes in the family and have been skirting that diagnosis for 2 decades. I am now official at 64... still controlling with diet.. A1C still good, but fasting glucose is not good. Here is the new fructose video from medical sources. Feeding that baby sugar laced formula and fruit juices all the time, is not a good idea. Take a look at how much sugar is in infant formula! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM The doctor on this video sees infants 6mos old already who are obese! |

My Mom's (non-pregnant) weight hovered around 115. I'm the only child who was born in a hospital and who was officially weighed. I was 10#. (Dad says I wasn't the biggest!) My preggo daughter was 10 lbs. at birth. I just now tested my fasting glucose level: 109. I'm overweight and need to eat healthier (New Year's Res!), but I'm not diabetic. Thanks, mrsD, for the video. I intend to watch it this afternoon. I'll send a link to my dd, too. |
Twinkletoes, I was pregnant with my daughter in 1983/84. I was also gestational diabetic which they caught at 5 or 6 months I believe it was. But I was diet controlled. My daughter was born prematurely at 7 months (for other reasons) but she was not large not even for a premie. In any case, yes, it went away immediately after I gave birth and I have been fine thus far. Anyway, I had her at age 27 and am now 54. I will say I WAS warned about watching my blood sugar for the rest of my life and I have done so. I was also warned about future pregnancies. So, my A1C's and other tests have been fine throughout the years. That's not to say it won't or can't develop. It just hasn't yet. I wish your daughter the best. But yes, I agree with Pab she can and should get on a diabetic diet as soon as she can to get it under control. Oh, and I should add...my daughter when born, did not require insulin or sugar or whatever it is that she may have needed. She just had the normal, I guess I should say, issues from being a premie. Anyway, she is now 27 and there have been no issues with her own blood sugar. And right before Christmas I found out I am going to be a Grandma...YAY! But I do worry about her as well because I know what I went through.
