Damn!..... I Fell !!

Ingredients:
-One happy to see me 'pup' (active 2 y.o. 13" beagle)
-one 62 y.o, 255 lb., PN man, w/balance problems, trying to pivot on one foot, to turn around and walk in another direction.

Result:

I Fell !!
Tripped up legs with a pup underfoot.... causes big oaf to fall down!
Damn !

The dog is always very happy & excited when I get home from work- hopping, & jumping around, & thru, & between, my feet & legs.
She got me off balance and I couldn't stop it ...... BAM !
(like a log - but flailing, all the way down)

My right knee is tender & sore, a bit swollen, & discolored today.
When I fell, the pain was excruciating and I felt 'wet' dripping down my shin. I thought it was a fracture and the bone had come thru & I was bleeding. Nope! Just the PN playing tricks.
Only a bruised knee & part of the shin -fortunately it was
on the w/w carpeting in the hall, but it felt like it was concrete.....
PN again.:o
I felt like 'Ralph Cramden' (Gleason-'The Honeymooners') doing
a pain 'shtick'. Pounding the floor, moaning "Arrrgghhh!.... Owww!!!..... It HURRTTS, IT HURRTTS!!" :Bawling:
& trying to catch my breath.

My better half sez "should I call an ambulance?"
I say....gasping.... "let's get my pants leg up and look at it first" (thinking it was poking thru the skin-a compund fracture-
blood - Ewww!!)- "but let me just lie here for a minute, and get my breathing and blood pressure, close to normal-OK?".:Dunno:

Upon observation, one would have thought it was 'all in my head', and I shouldn't have made such a big thing out of it- nothing looked wrong....until the knee started to swell, & I iced it down.(20-on, 20-off)

I'm not mad at the dog, but I did say...
"honey, I tole ya...... that dog will kill me one a these days". :frown:
(I must've said it at least once a week, since we adopted her from our local chapter of "Animal Rescue" - last Sept.)

I haven't had a fall since I went in the 3 ft. hole on the construction site (it was in a dark place, never saw it til I was 1/2 in & 1/2 out of it) about 2+ yrs ago. I still (and will forever) have the scars from my ankle to my knee - on the shinbone- same leg, the Rt one - it looks terrible when I wear shorts in the summer :().

Damn!.......
.....I Fell !

O.K., bright side... nothing is broken, Dog is still alive! Down side, wife has to cater to you for a few days while you heal. Poor dog has to sit by your side and wonder why you keep looking at him like that every time he looks up at you! Up side, dog will probably get more treats sitting by your side as you sit in a chair healing feeling guilty for shooting him dirty looks.

We all wish you well, and if I could order some of Mel's muffins and have them shipped to you I certainly would! (Of course, I can't cook myself, but money can certainly buy some happiness!)

Keep us up to date on your healing, and how it affects your PN! You can come here and grumble, we'll listen! Save your wife and dog from a few bad moments.

First off, about falling....

You are in VERY good company here.

Second, DON'T DO THAT!!!!

Lastly, during your 'recovery' period, it mite be time to talk to yourself [and the dog] about obedience classes?

Having fallen on the same knee twice so far, arent' the stars you see amazing? Just like a science fiction movie but for real..

I sure hope you don't have to keep it elevated for weeks on end like I did tho. I really hope not!

Get well faster than normal! - j

Sorry to hear about the fall, Bob--

--and hope you will heal all up real soon.

Until you do--as you've already noticed, whenever you get another injury, peripheral neuropathy will do all sorts of fun things and in around the injury site to convince you that you have a worse injury than you do. I've written before how those of us with neuropathy are thereby far more prone to compressive nerve symptoms than the average person--and selling of any area will certainly compress nerves and produce all sorts of weird sensations.

I know that every time I bruise/bang myself heavily (not often, fortunately) I can look forward not only to the "normal" nociceptive pain of the bruising, but a bewildering variety of nreve shoots, pulses, tingles, "liquid running", "banding" in and around the injured area for a while. Fortunately, at least so far, these tend to fade as the injury heals, though it often takes longer for these neural symptoms to depart than it does for the pain caused by swelling/tissue damage.

Oh, no.... a dreaded fall!

I did one similar... 2 yrs ago it is now. I had terrible pain in the knee, I iced it
and it only bruised-- no lasting damage....BUT....I had damaged my tendons in the leg..the Adductors. These did not blow out until a month later with devastating results. I am still not 100%, although my pain did lessen over a YEAR!

So I would watch it.. Stay off it,
and let it heal. (I was stupid and continued to work, go to the gym, etc--<kicking myself>). I did not feel anything in the groin at first...that came later. I think the knee pain masked the other pain.

You will have to watch the Dog Whisperer on Nat Geo channel and learn to get that dog to stop getting in your way. Falls, I think, are the worst danger to us.
They can be fatal (broken hip) or just debilitating like mine was.

You have my deepest sympathy. That fall of mine was stupid, and changed my life in a very negative way. I tend to fall/trip at least once a year, but mainly I don't injure myself, like the major one in the bedroom 2 yrs ago on a hard wood floor!

Whew!

I'm glad you weren't seriously injured.

Ouch!

That could really have been a bad deal. I am glad you are OK. Thankfully, nothing is broken and you didn't fall on the dog... Hopefully, everything will heal up just fine and you will good as new quickly.

I fell on different occasions. Twice in the streets on the ice. No big deal.

Once, after I had washed my ceramic tile floor with Pine Sol (never did that again). I fell on my knee and when you have degenerative joint disease primarily in your knees, well forget it. The pain was horrendous!!!

BUT, the most outlandish time I fell anywhere was when we were at a flea market in front of a church. I was walking along, looking at the various tables and such, when all of a sudden, I am in a hole. At least my right leg was in a hole. It seems that they were planting a tree on the sidewalk, and they had dug a hole, but no one covered it up on that particular Sunday.

Imagine, looking to your left at a flea market table and in a flick of a second your right leg is in this hole and your left leg is bent up to your neck.

I never was so surprised in all my life. I started screaming, Alan comes running. OH, AND IF YOU THINK ANYBODY EXCEPT ALAN CAME TO MY AID, well forget it!!! And this was in front of a church no less. They just looked at me. When Alan got me out of that hole, I was bleeding, scratched and just plain mad.

But I recovered, and so will you. And you have this nice little doggie to keep you company.

So ice it and pour yourself a cold one!!!
