Electric bicycle
 

Does anyone have any experience with an electric bicycle? I used to ride a mtn bike and now I would like to try a bike with an electric assist engine.
I am wondering if anyone else has tried one.

My DH bought one for me a couple of years ago. It has a small battery and a hand control. The motor is turned on by me twisting the handle. I can pedal at will, but when I get tired, I turn that motor on and whee!! I leave him in the dust:D
It is wonderful--one problem is that my balance isn't great, and I get nervous when people come near me. Something to work on;)

Wonderful. That's just what I am looking for.
Can you tell me what brand it is? Did you have to buy the whole bike or just a motor etc for your regular bike?

You all can ride a bike?!?

Last time I tried I had to have my friend hang on to the back of me cause I could not keep my momentum going....I kept slowing down and almost falling off... I gave up.

I miss riding bikes...Used to have a Stump Jumpper and did single track a lot and rode around town. I really mis sit.

I'm happy yo ucan still ride....Enjoy it!

I believe Specialized makes a real nice electric assist.... It looked bad *** too... Real expensive tho....like around 3,000 if I remember.

Electric Bikes and Conversion Kits

It's possible to buy electric bike conversion kits which are installed on a non-electric bike.

In time, both electric bikes and kits will be less expensive.

I remember riding an electric bike years and years ago. My father was working for a car dealership and for some reason they had a few of them. We rode them in a parade that was about ten miles start to finish, and well the bikes only ran electrically for about two of those miles. I'm sure in the past twenty years or so they've improved the battery life, but I would definitely suggest whether kit or purchased in total, that you look at the battery life for the bike.

I own two electric bikes -- a folding / travel one by a company called eJoe and a mountain=type one made by Pedego -- and they have been life altering, if not changing. Until them, I could ride maybe 1/4 mile and then couldn't make it home. but on the Es, heck, I can go 20 miles if i want. with both of them you can either pedal alone, use pedal along with electric as an assist, or use electric alone. getting out and about like this has been a blessing.
it's how i get my groceries and go to the beach and just tool around town. forget the car.
i fiddled together a cart for my dog and take her almost everywhere with me. she loves it.
on the downside, they ain't cheap. $1,000 gets you a low-end model. but they are coming down in price.
