Recommended Ped. GI Iowa/Mayo, MN
 

Hello,

Does anyone have any recommendations of pediatric GI doctors familiar with gluten sensitivity and reflux in Iowa or Mayo, MN? We are to see a visitting GI doctor in November (Dr. Bishop), has anyone heard of him or seen him? Our concern is that he will only be here one day, and will only come every 3 months. We are wondering what type of testing he will be able to order and if they will be familair with children who have Autism. We ran into problems here when an EEG was attempted, and ended up going to Mayo to have it done.

Cara first told us about Dr. Kenneth Fine's innovative work, regarding diagnosing gluten sensitivity (&/or casein sensitivity, etc.) in a non-invasive way, with high reliability. He's a gastro doc (MD), who himself has a non-Celiac form of gluten sensitivity. His non-invasive stool sample tests (done by his lab, EnteroLab) are very reliable, and, don't require a prescription!

Also, I have some gastric reflux tips, that you may find helpful, on webpage 10 of my website,-- for both adults/older children, and for infants.

Hello! So excited to see fellow Iowans. Don't want to scare you about Dr. Bishop, but my friend had a terrible experience with him. She had a little two year old girl who was 16lbs and her hair was falling out. They saw 4 specialists at the University of Iowa and they all poo-pooed her. They sent her home saying the 2 year old needed to go to a psychologist. They told her the little girl was manipulating them and they should put her in her high chair and face it against the wall and give her all the food she wants. She was starving because the food wasn't absorbing, but the doctors said it was all about control. I saw pictures of her hair that had fallen out. The doctor wrote in his chart. No hair loss noted. It's very scary, I know, but I wanted to tell you what I know. I have a referral to Iowa City, but I am waiting for my son's Enterolab results first. I went to the pediatric GI in Davenport. His name was Yaseen and then he was investigated for incompetence in the paper three days later. Our story has been full of bad luck and misinformed doctors. I would love to know who the Davenport person sees for a doctor. Good luck, and keep an open mind. Dr. Bishop also told my friend (who I've met through Celiac group) that "you don't want your daughter to have that, it's a terrible disease that makes them social outcasts." She left crying, needless to say. Please let me know what you decide. On the flip side, my other friend who's a psychologist said he's heard wonderful things about Bishop. Who knows? I just think most dr's think Celiac is rare and don't believe the mothers. Keep us posted!
