Osteopath, anyone?
 

So along the way talking to many people with TOS and similar issues, I have heard many references to osteopaths. Before I had TOS I had never even heard of an Osteopath. I certainly would not have thought to go visit one for the symptoms I am having. But from what I understand, somewhere as a standard part of their schooling, Osteopaths receive trainnig on TOS.

I thought it would be worthwhile to start a thread to collect peoples' experiences with them, so that it might help someone looking for alternative treatment options.

I'd like to start with me :D

My first few PT experiences were not very good :Bang-Head:

In december, from a lucky and VERY much appreciated recomendation from another member of this forum, I started seeing a new PT, whom I affectionately refer to as SuperJoyce. She is a TOS specialist. She is by some accounts one of 12 specially trained PT's in all of southern CA. I have had some real successs with her, she has a very hands on approach and does a lot of body work.


It took me about a month to get out of her where she got her "special training". For a while all she would tell me was that it was an eclectic collection of knowledge. For one, she is a board certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist. For two, she has a very good knowledge of body mechanics and awareness techniques like Feldenkrais and Hellerwork. Where practical she intergrates them into the PT. But the kicker, and the thing that seems to separate her from other PT's, is that she has and continues to train with a group of highly regarded Osteopaths in the San Francisco Bay area. A lot of what she does is based on principles of Osteopathic manipulation and manual therapy.


I thought that was cool. :D

Way back Osteopathic Drs where more in line with chiropractors as far as studying more on the physical body and structures, and doing that style of work.

Now many have turned more to the mainstream of MD style work and tx.

But you can still find some that will be old school - i suppose.

I did change Drs to an Office that has DO as the main - but I see the RNLP - haven't had to see the DO yet since DC tx is doing well for me.

bumping the thread for LA31...there was an excellent story from Olecyn that I was hoping would make it to this thread...she told me she was hurting too much to type it but that I could add it (i have been hurting a bit too so I haven't yet)

Her story was regarding the DO interns who work the first aid booth at Anaheim Angels games...something about season tickets being cheaper than therapy and visit the first aid booth for a manipulation each game :D ......she had some very good results. Is it baseball season yet?

Also, my neighbor has a similar (but not quite TOS) condition and has had good luck with osteopathic manipulation.

My Hellerworker works out of an office with a DO, suggests that I might benefit. I have been thinking about going to see him.

There is also someone on this board in the northeast somewhere who just went to see a DO, was it Jamy? My memory fails me.
