quinine for leg cramps.

I was wondering if any of you have used quinine for leg cramps.

I saw a new Urologist yesterday and he brought this up to me. I am thinking of getting some and trying it.

Also, requip, I read where it is used for RLS and he mentioned it for RSD but I am wondering if he just misunderstood what I said when I mentioned my RSD.

I am right now pretty much pain free except when the warm wind blows and my pelvic pain but my RSD in my arms and leg is calm. Knock on Wood....

I just thought that this might be something of interest to some of you.

I was given it years ago, and it was essentially useless. 100+ years ago it might have been the best drug available, but now we have far better.

There was, however, one interesting moment in which I accidentally aspirated a capsule into my lungs and was sick for weeks.
:yikes:

Thanks Michael,

I did pull up a lot of websites talking about it's use these days so apparently it does help some still.

A google search comes up with these results-
http://www.google.com/search?q=quini...ient=firefox-a

a quick skim looks like it might be 50/50 either way.
A good way to compare pluses & minuses..before trying anything:)

I remember when Quinine was the treatment for leg cramps.

It has however gone out of favour and in some places (like here) you can't even get it on prescription any more. Other medications like Baclofen have taklen over, but if you really do want Quinine, then drink Tonic Water. That has enough Quinine in it to ease the most stubborn of leg cramps.

Thanks Koala

I can remember a lot of home remedies when I was a kid that Mom and Dad used on us. There were 10 of us so we all had our fair share of awlful tasting stuff.

I did have growing pains when I was a kid but I don't remember the quinine.

They do sell it over the counter here.

I'm not much on any meds over the counter or otherwise. I recently tried Metamucil for my constipation and bloating and it made me worse. When I saw my Gastro he told me to quit it because it would.

We just don't know about any of the over the counter meds any more then we do the prescription meds and what they will do until we try them.

To you that said you had growing pains as a kid in your legs, did any of you develope Fibromyalgia?? Just curious because I did. The doctor that DX'ed me said later when I told him had horrible 'growing pains' in my legs so bad that my Mom took me to the doctor back when your folks only took you when it was super serious, that they were a precursor to developing Fibromyalgia. Not everyone who had them did so, but alot of people who did had them. Don't mean to hijack this thread but reading about childhood leg cramps triggered my brain. And btw, my doctor when I was a kid didn't prescribe quinine for my leg cramping.

I used to take quinine for rls and it worked quite well. the side effect is a depletion of platelets. that's why it was removed from the market. there is a new form of it on the market now so you might want to ask your pharmacist about it.

i tried requip and it was of no use. no matter how much i took. i take klonipin and it works very well. 1 mg about 45 minutes before i go to bed.

as Koala said, you can get quinine in Tonic Water that you purchase at the grocery store. try that for a while and see if you get some relief.
