And another one bites the dust - Fish Oil Claims Not Supported by Research

Fish oil is now the third most widely used dietary supplement in the United States, after vitamins and minerals, according to a recent report from the National Institutes of Health. At least 10 percent of Americans take fish oil regularly, most believing that the omega-3 fatty acids in the supplements will protect their cardiovascular health.

But there is one big problem: The vast majority of clinical trials involving fish oil have found no evidence that it lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke.

From 2005 to 2012, at least two dozen rigorous studies of fish oil were published in leading medical journals, most of which looked at whether fish oil could prevent cardiovascular events in high-risk populations. These were people who had a history of heart disease or strong risk factors for it, like high cholesterol, hypertension or Type 2 diabetes.

All but two of these studies found that compared with a placebo, fish oil showed no benefit.

Just to be clear, heart attack and stroke are one thing, brain health quite another. I'll continue on with my Omega 3's, thank you.

So it may not help for the high risk categories... and they are probably on statins already too.
The article title is misleading, makes you think it means for everyone , but not the case, you have to read the whole article.

fish oil like many supplements are not regulated by fda, nor has been in any clinical trials to prove that it works as it advertisement. Supplement companies avoid fda approval so they sell it claiming these issues.

There is too an rx fish oil .. Lovaza.
Look it up.

Trying to do DRUG studies with food nutrients
Tends to fail.

Omega-3s are basically nutrients and as such
Are needed for maintenance and repair of
Tissues. They are considered essential.
But our diets tend to lack them today.
If you eat wisely you don't have the same
need for supplements. However, most do not
Consume enough to maintain health.

My son has ADHD and when we corrected his
Deficiency he was able to improve and no longer
Need drugs for it.

We take Krill oil now daily in this house and have
Done so with either fish oil or now the krill daily for over
A decade now.

And also .. The FDA does have rules regarding
Advertising supplements. Companies cannot make
medical claims to consumers without studies
on file.. The FDA sends out warning letters every
day and if ignored will shut them down.
