Second Concussion

This is my second concussion and the symptoms are lasting alot longer than they did during the previous one. Both were sustained during football. After the first I had trouble reading and typing (which i still have trouble doing), now after this one I have issues with balance, coordination, memory (someone will tell me something then 10 seconds later I cant remember it), lack of motivation and sensitivity to light and sound (all of these leading to depression). CT and MRI Scans negative for both for both concussions, but Im positive something is wrong. Wondering how long these symptoms will last? And if I will ever return to normal.

Hello,
I don't know if you have read any chiropractic information about the atlas/axis also called c1-c2 misalignments?
I know some don't consider chiropractic treatment but just in case - here are some info links for you.

Chiropractic care info- a good one can help with many symptoms:

Don't drink coffee like Vini is suggesting although I know he means well. It'll probably be several months before you're starting to feel right again but try to go with it. You WILL get better and a lot of people have been through this and I'm one of them. Take it easy and find your limits. Don't get alarmed by not being able to do things properly....I couldn't get myself together to make a simple meal 5 months ago, now I am in full time education, drawing and making music again. It's a real struggle but you'll be stronger when you come through it.

i know that healing is different for everyone, but how long on average would you guys think it would take me to get back to normal? Also how long should i stay out of sports? I talked to a neurologist, but she didnt seem to understand my symptoms and didnt have much advice.... she only said you will get better (and i dont know if that was just SOP to try to psychologically better my mood)

hi

hi donut 3

coffee or caffeine has help many with pcs so read up on why its some thing i do but obviously in moderation omega 3 I have been taking for a month now and feel 10% better but I had multiple skull fractures these are all natural ways to help you cope why bengi say don,t listen to that simple good advice I don,t know  as to the time frame if you have pcs they talk about 6weeks 3 months 6 months and a year after a year you are probably likely to here the word tbi or abi now I am not trying to frighten you but these are the facts so the answer is no one knows it depends on the person but more so on how bad the injury was and its a gradual process you obviously like your sport but repeat concussions can lead to you ending up being punch drunk theres a post hear some were with a link to sport related concussion

still early days for you so don,t worry MOST people will recover within the first 6 weeks to 3 months

hope this answers your question take it easy and keep us posted

been a while since i first posted about my second concussion and not much has gotten better....another symptom that has been occurring since then is my right pupil is larger than my left, making my vision in the right eye much blurrier than the left. I looked up what it could mean and most sites said it was serious. What should i do about this?

I am sorry about your recent concussion :(

I have to touch upon a couple of things, before I forget! I agree with Benjamin, about avoiding caffeine for a while. Sorry, Vini, not a personal attack against you ;). Many people with TBI's begin having migraine headaches and epilepsy. Caffeine has a negative effect on the brain and contributes to dehydration. Therefore, caffeine is a no-no until you've fully recuperated.

I'd certainly recommend that you either see a different neurologist or an internal medicine doctor to look into your symptoms more closely. Recurrent concussions certainly add up. The more concussions or TBI's you have, the risk of having another increases significantly. There was an article in Neurology Now (maybe 2 or 3 issues ago?) that discussed the impact that recurrent concussions have upon athletes. You can go to their site online, read the article, and request a subscription. It's free to consumers & is written by professionals. You ought to check it out:cool:.

The difference in pupil size is an indication of a TBI. Is there a significant difference in size? Also, how long has this effect been present?

I recommend bringing a neutral party. One who you see relatively often. Bring them with you to your doctor's appointment, to help. In order to feel better, you need to provide the doctor accurate descriptions of events, feelings, etc. You may or may not be able to do that. The doctors usually go into a spew of questions (which are very confusing!), and you may need help to get your experience/s across to the doctor.

Hope my insight helps a little bit. Best wishes:hug:

Hi donut - how long to stay out of sports? At least until your symptons are clear is my advice.

7 years ago I banged my head 2x within 6 weeks, then approx 6 months after that my car was rear ended - another concussion, fell down some stairs approx 6 months after that and so on - I have never recovered to being my old self - I am like a punch drunk boxer. Any sudden jerky movements that shake my head and the vicious type of headache returns - going over speed bumps on the road will start it off. You shouldn't wrap yourself in cotton wool but please let your brain have time to recover - what is a year out of your life now when it could be with you for ever?

After the second injury I took it for granted that I would recover within a week and kept trying to work - forcing my brain continuously - in hindsight it was the dumbest thing I could have done and I am of the opinion that this is why I have not fully recovered.

Please treasure your head and don't bang it again for a long time!! You are young you will be better sooner rather than later.

Lynlee
