Happy Anniversary Alaska

50 years ago June 30th, Alaska became the 49th state. Wynonna Judd and Naomi came here last night and did a free concert at Elmendort AFB and it was broadcast live here. That woman can sing!! What a voice.

She connected a 14 year old girl to her Daddy in Iraq and the girl was crying so hard, all she could say was 'Hi Dad'. I sobbed like a baby. It was heart breaking. She has not seen her Dad in a year.

Anyway....Except the fact that we are not getting summer this year (still!), we are having a great time celebrating all over the state.

Hope all are well and happy and safe!
Jeannie

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, carries a cake to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of Alaska's statehood June 26,
2008, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Thanks for the reminder!

We have a 48 star flag from before Alaska and Hawaii became states. We don't fly it but it's a nice reminder that not ALL of our states were states during the last century!

It's hard to believe that Hawaii became a state AFTER I was born! (They became a state on August 21, 1959!)

Happy Birthday Alaska!!!

What I'd like to know is how Alaska became part of the US, so far up into Canada?

Because the US bought Alaska from the Russians, therefore, we were a US Territory. We wanted statehood and fought for it for years. Many in the East did not want Alaska as a state as the Democrates were concerned it would not turn in their favor, however, after much debate, it was passed into law.

Thank you beautiful.
That's really tearing at Moose's soft side.
And I get to see my sons every day.
