Does PN cause leg swelling?
 

I started out last year with nerve pain in abdomen. It has since spread to legs and arms. Now my left leg is swollen mostly around the knee. Is this related to PN? Or could it be something else. I do stand a lot as it hurts me to sit.

I am on 1600 mg gabapentin per day.

I think the gabapentin may be contributing. It causes dependent
edema esp when it is hot and humid.

I have some problem with my left ankle...swelling and going down. It is a surgical site, with some internal damage to the instep so I think it is just edema from not draining well. + some arthritis.

I had very swollen legs and knees from Norvasc ...a blood pressure drug. Some of the calcium channel blockers do that too.

Sometimes it can be other things going on... if you have inflammatory issues, like arthritis, that will do it too. The swelling from fluid edema usually goes down when you put the leg up or at night when sleeping. And then it returns each day as the day wears on. Swelling from inflammation does not go down like that as a rule.

Should I tell doctor about it? I have a routine appointment tomorrow for something else.

Gabapentin helps me a lot and I would hate to be taken off of it. I feel I would be housebound without it as it hurts to wear clothes. I would be willing to put up with quite a few side effects.

I think you should always report the leg swelling to your doctor.
It may be due to the treatment or something new entirely.

When you mentioned leg swelling around the knee in one leg, I immediately thought of blood clot, but sense your on your feet alot its probably something else, but do inform the doctor, I'm in this hospital bed most of the time so I'm aware of getting blood clots, I move around in the wheelchair using my feet for movement a couple times a day, thats my exercise. Wishing you the very best.

I don't want to seem pushy? But what kind of 'nerve pain' did/do you have in your abdomen? A few more details can help some of those who've been there a while with hints of what and/or where to look for possible issues. There are LOTS of folks here w/abdomen issues as well as others..
What have and/or are any of the docs saying? Tests you've had done? Etc.
I know it's hard for a new person to let 'out' too much as, you are new? But, at the same time, we can't steer you in the best directions for research and help if we don't have a bit more of the picture.
I've always found everyone here to be good and kind. Take a bit of time a little a day to read the 'Stickies' at the top of the forum. Up there are the 'goodies' that should be kept for easier reference. And, there are a lot of them!

I had a consult with a new pain management doctor and when he examined me, he touched the front of my ankle and to my surprise, it hurt. He went on to say that neuropathy can cause swelling. I didn't realize that my ankle was swollen, but it was. Anyway, he wasn't a bit surprised by it and I should have thought to ask for more info, but I was somewhat distracted and trying to focus on why I was there. FWIW.

I cannot tolerate high does of lyrica or neurontan. 150mg lyrica is about my limit , anymore and I get swelling in one knee or the other and have wondered why it never happened in both knees? also my feet would swell putting pressure on the nerves making it worse.

I never became accustomed to it and the lyrica lost effect anyway. I found elavil more effective and swelling has stooped for me so there are other options out there.

I swell and sometimes it is worse then other times. I also am on neurontin but the swelling started before and really varies so much. I am not saying it is not from the neurontin in your case or mine actually but just my experience. Some days I just swell more for no reason but when I am more active,the weather is more humid,and also when my pain is higher I seem to swell. Though when my pain is higher I am not sure if the swelling is causing higher pain or the pain is causing more swelling.
I agree about telling your doctor. I always state any changes even if it is small which swelling is not but in general I am speaking
EE I always have a list of what I need to talk to my doctors about so that I don't forget or get distracted when at the apt.

I did go to doctor today for cholesterol check. I showed her knees and she said she could see no swelling.

I just joked about having fat knees.
