Could it be siezures?

Was recently taken to the ER after a brief black out that was preceded with dizziness, loss of vision, problems talking and thinking normally. The problems lasted for about 5 days ( in saying this I feel "ok" at the moment) after having a complete work up, from blood drawn to an EKG I was diagnosed with vertigo and told to see a doctor with in the week. The ER doc mentioned the possibility of seizures.

Now I do suffer from migraines, anxiety and am bipolar. My migraines have increasing become more symptomatic since I was a teen. I however did not have one this past week. I'm concerned ( to top that off with a stressful week at work) I seem to not be able to function normally and since Tuesday at that. Any advice would be helpful.

Hi butterfly,

Welcome to the forum. I'm no Dr. but what you are describing sounds possibly like a seizure. Before I started having seizures I had wicked migraine headaches. The best thing for you to do is to go and see an Epileptologist (Dr. speacializing in epilepsy) and be sure you go to an Epilepsy Center which are often found at University Hospitals. Stress, lack of sleep and hormones changing are 3 big things that can trigger seizures. If you have a calendar write down what time this possibles seizure happened with a description and be sure to show it to the Dr. often they can see a pattern in seizures. Start taking vitamin B12 once a day and stay away from anything with nutra sweet in it because nutra sweet will cause more electrical activity in the brain and can trigger seizures for people. I wish you the best of luck and if you are in the U.S. you can call the Epilepsy Foundation of America at 1-800-332-1000 and they will send you info. on epilepsy as well as give you advice as to what might be going on and they will also tell you of Drs. in your area. I wish you only the best and May God Bless You!

Hello and Welcome to NeuroTalk!!

butterfly,

It is great to have you here with our bundle of great friends. I will agree with Sue on what she said. Stress can really bring on a seizure. Always remember we are here to help you out, please keep us up to date on your condition. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Darlene

Hi Butterfly -
To add to what the others have said, as Porkette mentioned, nutrasweet (aspartame) is a big trigger of seizures, as well as MSG (and all its hidden forms), which are in most processed foods like frozen dinners, canned foods, salad dressings, etc. Too much of these can cause seizures. Your symptoms also could be a change in your migraines. The aura from migraines, and migraines alone, can cause those symptoms. Good luck, and I hope you find the answers you need!

Hi mylilbutterflyz,

I don't have much to offer other than sympathy and best wishes. Your experience sounds rather frightening and hopefully you and your dr. can figure out what's going on. Good luck!
