Maybe Progress At the Dr's Office

Thanks to everyone that helped me after my last frustrating appointment. I appreciate the support and guidance.

Saw my (newer, younger) doc this morning and as a result of that, he had ordered a brain scan with contrast (iodine) and is making the referral to the local hospital's brain injury rehab program for an assessment.

I have no idea how long the wait will be for either, probably long, but at least it is a start.

I've been very stressed about this appointment and now so relieved that it went so well. I'm transferring to this new younger doc, he has agreed to be my new GP, so once that paperwork is done I'll be even more relieved to be away from the "old as dirt" "set in his ways" ready to retire doc I've been fighting with.

I know none of the things that happened today will fix me or anything, but at least now it seems I'm being taken seriously... or at least seriously enough to get an assessment.

Thanks to all for advice and help!

That's awesomely fantastic! SO thrilled for you.... Having a doc that understands the new info that has come out regarding concussions is a great thing. Once the rehab unit contacts you, make sure you ask to be put on the cancellation list, and let them know you could be there in X amount of time (for me, I needed 1.5 hours notice to make it to downtown toronto)... it makes you more likely to get an appointment that isn't too far down the road.

Congratulations! This is great news! I'm so glad you're going in for an official assessment. I hope you start getting the treatment you need to get better as well and as fast as possible. We all know that there's no magic bullet to heal from a concussion, but therapy could end up helping you a great deal! And I can't imagine what it must be like to try to fight a Dr. through having a head injury... I'm really glad it sounds like you won't have to do that anymore. :)

I'm not sure how, but my ct scan is booked for tomorrow night. Maybe a cancellation, I dunno. Don't expect it to show anything, but WOW on the quickness.. that's unheard of!

CT scans will show if there's a bleed or swelling in the brain, but usually don't tell much more (maybe MArk could give you more info regarding this!). God luck... the Cat scan was easy... I had a knee MRI done a year ago and it was WAY worse than the cat scan.

Had the CT scan, but it was without contrast after all? I see my doc tomorrow so I will ask him about that. I assume it showed nothing since I have not heard from them, but will double check tomorrow.

Also heard from the brain injury rehab clinic and was told they have a 6 MONTH waiting list. Spoke with the intake nurse for about 15 minutes and then suddenly I have an appointment for an assessment in 7 WEEKS?!

Kinda feel like I failed a test or something. I mean its good that I don't have to wait longer, but now I'm thinking that maybe my answers to her questions revealed I'm worse off than I thought?! I don't know.

Trying to focus on the shorter waiting time and see it as a good thing.

Starr,

The brain injury rehab clinic may have recognized that you are truly suffering PCS symptoms and not just a complainer looking for sympathy or a quick fix. The 6 month waiting time may be useful at filtering out the complainers versus those with real struggles.

Many people with PCS will stop complaining after a wait like that. It allows the spontaneous healing to take place, especially for those who want a quick fix.

You've paid you dues both in time and in understanding.

At my prior health care provider, we had a belief that if the clinic put your appointment out long enough, the complaint will heal on its own. This is how they kept costs down.

Don't try to over-think this. Just go with it and see what happens.

My best to you.
