Haven't been here for a while. Another question?
Hi Everyone,
I haven't been here for a while, been busy raising my grandchildren. My full body neuropathy has progressively gotten worse. I have a question I am hoping you guys can help me with. My iron tests have come back and my Doctor is concerned, my iron/TIBC, saturation 55% iron total 178 mcg/dl Ferritin 86 NG, and Transferrin 221mg. Doctor is concerned about iron overload, but I am a little Leary of this because I have heard inflammation in your body can cause false positive high iron levels. I hope my question makes sense and I'm asking it in the right way. Can someone help me with these results and help me understand if inflammation could cause my iron levels to look like this or if inflammation could. Side false positive high iron levels. Thank you for your help. |
Has your doctor considered the possibility of hemochromatosis? It often has a strong genetic component. Usually clinical signs present in men between 50 and 60 y.o and in women who are more than 60 y.o.
This information might help you to ask your doctor informed questions Symptoms and causes - Hemochromatosis - Mayo Clinic. All the best. |
I suggest you follow your doctor's advice about these results.
1) have the testing repeated in a few months. Lab tests can be not accurate in some cases. This is a serious initial finding and you need to stay on top of it. 2) here is a link in easy to understand language: Causes of Elevated Serum Ferritin | LIVESTRONG.COM Keep in mind though that Livestrong rewords other medical sites and sometimes can in inaccurate too. But there are times they are helpful none the less. A poster here...Marlene has posted about hemochromatosis as her husband has it. You might contact her yourself. http://www.neurotalk.org/members/3291.html |
