Lower left 2nd molar and tongue

Hi, Hope someone can help, i have a heavily filled lower left molar, over a year ago it started to give pain, my dentist took x rays and said it could possibly need root canal treatment in the future but was reluctant to do anything as hopefully it would settle down, luckily it did.
This has happened a few time since, toothache etc then settling down after a week or so.
A week ago i started toothache again same place, no redness or swelling anywhere, upon looking in the mouth no sign of anything, toothache is there most of the day. At the same time as this i have what seems to be a painful tongue at the back same position as the tooth, it feels sore and hurts, like its been cut open or something, maybe even like a muscle spasm type pain, this goes on when the toothach is not there as well, i think its from the tongue although as everything is so close could be the archaway at the back of the mouth i suppose but definately that area.
My question is can you get referred pain from the molar if it was inflammed in the root or maybe muscle spasm from the toothache?

Thanks
