False Hope for my PCS

I feel the need to vent, sorry if it gets annoying but I have no where else to go about this. Everytime I feel like I might actually be getting better or making steps towards it, I'm reminded by doctors and by everyday situations that I'm just not there yet. I'm 16 years old and I haven't gone a day without a headache in over 5 months. I can't go through a full day of school. I can't go to Friday night football games, because last time I did I spent the rest of the weekend vomiting and on total bed rest. I'm tired of feeling like this everyday, my doctors tell me that were doing everything we can and that its just going to take time. But I can't take it anymore. I just want to fall asleep till my brain decides it wants to get better. Nobody should have to deal with this, ecspecially a student. Sorry for complaining but thanks for letting me vent.

Alicia,

I understand your frustration. Many here have gone through the same frustration. Avoid the temptation to try an activity. You are at an age where social activities are a big part of your life. There is nothing that can be done to change this timing. You will only get past this time by avoiding the activities and stressors until you are head ache free for a couple of weeks straight. Then, you can slowly start adding a simple activity than wait to see if you have a return of symptoms.

You would likely do better not being at school at all. Boring? YES. But it may be your best way to recover. Even what appears to be "tolerable" stress is still a stress on your brain. It is like being a little bit pregnant. You can't do it. You are either under stress or you are not.

So, vent your frustrations here while you avoid stress. We will support you for doing the right things.

My best to you.

Thanks Mark! It's good to know that I'm supported 100%, I don't get that very often. I'm starting a "504 plan" next week so I'm a little nervous about that, but hopefully it will help. Thanks again, you help a lot of people on here.

Alicia, I'm so sorry. You're right - nobody should have to deal with this, especially not somebody your age. But be patient - you have time on your side and things will be better eventually. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it all go away for you.

Yes, please be patient. Physical and cognitive rest is the way to go. Good nutrition is also helpful for many people. Five months might seem like a long time but recovery can take quite a while - try to take things day by day and trust that over time you will improve. Many people are significantly better six, 12, 18 months out or even longer...in the meantime, try to avoid activities that trigger or exacerbate symptoms. My doctor told me to try to stay "sub-threshold" of symptoms as much as possible, and this has been good advice.

Alicia-

you are right. It sucks! :D Get the rest you can when you can. It really does help. Hang in there!
