Recall Alert Anti Epileptic Drugs ASD

RECALL May 23, 2013
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals is recalling Two Generic AED's.
Gabapentin Tablets-- 600mg, and 800 mg
Topiramate Tablets--- 200 mg

Gabapentin is the generic for Neurontin.
Topiramate is the generic for Topamax.

At this time it's a voluntary recall due to what they say is a "fishy smell."

I will pass this information onto others who are taking it. I had gotten an earlier fill of my Topiramate and it was from a different manufacturer so I'm unsure what the reasoning was behind it as the fill took place on 5/13. I do appreciate the info just the same though. :)

Hi Linnie,

Thanks for the info. I can see why they did a recall on the Neurontin they have found it causes sz. for people who never had epilepsy in their life, and for many people who already have epilepsy it has increased sz. and in some cases like me caused absence status sz. where I would be out of it for 40 min. to 3 hrs. I know the drug co. had over $210 million in lawsuits on this drug. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Interesting information... what I found most informative about the data is the above is being used to help persons who deal with not only seizures these drugs are being used to help persons who deal with chronic migraines.

As for the Epilepsy, which I have had since the age of 2, I have taken both drugs and I still take the generic Topomax at the lowest dose possible. Reasons being I have two devices controlling my type seizure flow because medication cannot manage my unique case. I never had an increase flow of seizures while on Neurontin the medication just could not help while being used with another drug due to my intensity of seizures. Every patient is unique and every case needs specific care in medication and doctor specialty. I've learned that over the years and after three surgeries.

Suebear

Hi Suebear,

A few yrs. ago my Dr. put me on Neurontin for bad headaches and it was then that I started to have absence status sz. then after watching NBC Dateline they had one of the drug co. former employees who turned them in for doing off market labeling with the drug along with doing an investigation on the drug co. only to find out that 72 people took their life while on the drug, and over 60 people who never had epilepsy started to have sz. right out of the blue. There was a class action lawsuit and I got involved with many others and that's when they busted the co. for over $210 million.
Since that time I've learned to have a DNA test to find the right sz. meds to take with the least side effect. I've had surgery twice to reduce my sz. and it was a great help. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Neurontin did nothing for me when I took it so I honestly haven't a clue about the drug other than the fact it couldn't touch my case nor the fact it was unable to touch my needs so it got removed from the type of medication list. I went onto another AED that was not taken at the time which put me one step closer to having the first surgery done as I had reached the mark of 15 different medications over the years. As for surgeries, October 2011 made my third and final surgery since we now know the DBS has the ability to control and manage the seizure activity better due to the higher amount in settings.
