Home renovations . . . :

Wheelchair accessibility is important in ALS care but many homes are in wheelchair unfriendly houses. When deciding on whether to renovate, a rule of thumb is kitchen and bathroom renovations usually 'pay-off' in so far as the value of the house is likely to increase more than the cost of the renovations. Other kinds are not as successful. Adding a swimming pool for example will likely cost more than the pool's value will add to the house.

For many patients, moving their home to a wheelchair accessible abode will likely be a wise choice. Heirloom homes are more difficult as patients are likely to wish to avoid moving and renovations are likely to be expensive. Suitable new abodes may not be in reach of a patient's social infrastructure and therefore be another complexity factor patients have to deal with.
