My fax machine is driving me crazy
 

Okay, don't get me started.

I'm a relatively intelligent woman who has BEEN FAXING SINCE FAXING WAS INVENTED.

In my living room, I have my Brother Intellifax 1270 hooked up to my answering machine (been this way for 18 years).

When my cartridge ran out (because I was getting stupid spam faxes every day), we never replaced the cartridge. BUT WE STILL WERE ABLE TO SEND FAXES. I know because people confirmed this.

Well, some time ago I had to fax Alan's medical stuff to a doctor and all they got was black pages.

I then went to the near by store and faxed from there.

Well, I just found out that yet again, (last week, but they just told me now), that they got black pages from my faxing them.

So I checked all connections. My phone (which is on the fax machine), had a dial tone. My fax was giving me the fax tones. IT SEEMED TO BE WORKING FINE.

I tried to fax again. She got black page at her end.

I said "Hmmm, let me see if this is connected the way it says in the manual.

IT WASN'T. I had the line from the wall thing going into the wrong place. (even though I got dial tones and fax signals, no one was getting my faxes).

So I just viewed the manual online.

this is what it says to do (and I just did this).

1. Plug the telephone line cord from the wall jack into the left side of the fax machine, in the jack labeled LINE. I DID THIS

2. Plug the telephone line cord from your TAD into the left side o the fax machine, in the jack labeled EXT (Makd sure this cord is connected to the TAD at the TAD'S telephone line jack, and not it's telephone set jack).

I DID THIS TOO!!!

3. Set the Answer Mode to Tad. (I have no idea what this means)

4. Set your external Tad to 4 rings or less (it is).

5. Set the Tad to answer calls (my answering machines ALWAYS works.


I just tried to fax my friend. I made sure I had a dial tone, I got the beeps, she gave me her number.

Guess what?

BLACK PAGE.

So what do I do next?

Why would a fax machine not be able to send faxes?

And why do they come out at the other end BLACK PAGES.

See, the fax is going through, no?? but the print is not.

You can Spourt me a fax to my # (606) 789-7301 and I'll see if it's black on my end. and if you're talking about that same medical fax, fax me 1 pg of it and a blank white pg with an "X" in the middle, or something. I'm thinking maybe HIPPA paper?

TAD? Telephone answering device? maybe like a rollover-thingy to distinguish between fax and answering machine?

Broken Wings.

Not going to fax you right now because I just faxed my friend again AFTER I CLEANED THE SCANNER, USING A LITTLE ALCOHOL PREP THING. I read the manual, I cleaned it like it said.

SAME BLACK THING CAME OUT AT THE OTHER END.

I am going to re-read the manual and then tomorrow I'm going to call up the Brother company.

I read the two links that Jo sent me. They talk about replacing scanning parts, etc.

This stupid thing is over 12 years old. It EVEN HAS REMOTE FAXING (whatever the heck that is).

I never used all the bells and whistles. I just FAXED.

But if you think I'm going to pay $70 for a part for a fax machine when I can simply go to Staples and buy a new one for $50, well you DON'T KNOW THIS SPROUT LADY.

If I find out what happened, (I have noted your fax no. (broken wings), and I'll try to send you a fax.

So if you ever see your fax machine start whistling and you see sprouts coming out at your end.

YOU'LL KNOW WHO SENT IT TO YOU!!!

Does it have a bulb or a light that might possibly need replacing? or maybe a lens?

I agree Melody,
the prices have come down on most of the electronics - so a new one is usually ore affordable than repairs that require parts replaced.

one guy did tell how to try to reset it- I figured that might be a cheap thing to try.

But the new ones are smaller , lighter and cost less.

I opened the bottom, I saw all the lights. SO THAT'S WORKING, RIGHT?

i then pressed the two black things on the sides which lift the roller. LIFT THE ROLLER??? Are they serious? Lift what??

All I could do was slide a little alcohol prep pad between the roller and what I believe to be a glass thing of some sort (the scanner??)

It's been SOOOOOO LONG, since I cleaned anything in this machine, I can't remember. At least 8 years.

I hadn't faxed anyone in years, but I hadn't had a cartridge so I couldn't get faxes. but I do remember I COULD FAX OUT.

So when I found out that other people were getting all black, I did the research on the internet and found MANY REASONS, notably, A DIRTY SCANNER.

But how on earth can one see the scanner if the thing on top of the scanner doesn't lift all the way up.

I followed instructions. Believe me, I CAN FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

Not like Alan, who when he is watching tv and he presses a wrong button on the remote, starts yelling 'THE TV IS BLUE, DO SOMETHING".

that's when I want to bop him.

I wish he knew SOMETHING about fax machines.

And to make matters worse, he has something called HOTBAR on this computer that won't let me delete it. I went to add/remove programs, and it won't let me remove anything. I went to the website and they prompt me to download an uninstaller.

Why should I download anything when I'm supposed to be able to do the add/remove option?

so between Alan doing forbidden stuff on the computer, and my stupid fax macine,

WELL, I JUST PUT UP A TREMENDOUS POT OF TOMATO CABBAGE SOUP.

At least my kitchen smells GOOD!!!

Some people just don't understand mechanical or electronic stuff.
That's just the way they are.

But I would want to bop someone that messed up things too.

you can't remove the hotbar thru the remove programs either?

No, can't remove the hotbar throuh the add/remove program feature.

When I click on remove, a screen comes up that tells me I can do two things,

There is no way to highlight "remove". It doesn' let you.

It lets you click on "next", or "cancel".

I tried clicking on "next", thinking it might remove SOMETHING, but when I click on next, it tells me 'you haven't selected anything".

How the heck can I select anything when it doesn't let me?

Something smells here, AND IT'S NOT MY CABBAGE SOUP.
