Burning Mouth Syndrome

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and would love some feedback on my problem.

I have burning mouth syndrome. I had to get a full upper denture in feb. of 09.
For those of you that don't know one usually get a immediate denture the day of the extractions.Which was the case with me. 4 months later I got my permanent. I had no burning problems with the 1st denture however 12 days after getting the permanent denture I started having BMS symptoms. It has now been 18 months and I have tried everything. At first I didn't know it only happened when I was wearing my denture because I was trying to adjust to them and left them in except to sleep.

The mystery is that I do not have the symptoms unless I have the denture in. I had the denture re cured in the event it was not cured properly. That did not work. I take alpha lopioc acid 400mg 2x a day and a herbal remedy "Bomarax" compounded to help BMS.
My last hope was that I had developed a allergy to acrylic so I had a test denture plate made out of vinyl ( sometimes used for acrylic sensitive patients)
Sadly, the vinyl didn't work, I still have the BMS but only when I have the denture in. The good new is I can find relief without my denture... bad news, I work and can't go without teeth.

I want so badly to find some help. I supplement with B12 and zinc. I have eliminated all my meds except for cymbalta, neurontin and klonopin. The latter two I take for restless legs. I am at my wits end. I spend every free moment online trying to figure it out to no avail.
My next move is to try Elavil.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Hope:)

Dear Hope:

You need to come to terms with this BMS or you will go crazy. I almost did. I also have dentures and have had them for about 4 years ago. I have tried B12 also and have stopped taking some of my meds and have tried almost everything that you have tried. This is a terrible "enigma". Cold water helps, but I have burning with or without my dentures in. The left side of my tongue, near the tip burns also. I was very angry last year and prayed a lot. I used to pray at night, "Mary, please help me get through the night. This year I seem to be dealing with my BMS much better. I will chalk it up to prayers and Jesus.

Good luck to you!

Dale

Thanks, I do pray a lot, and it is making me crazy.I have the symptoms mostly with my dentures in. So now I am trying to adjust to the idea ( as depressing as it is) going without my dentures. I am only 54 and used to feel pretty at 5' tall with long red hair and sparkling blue eyes. but now, the sparkle is gone and I seldom leave the house. When I am out and wearing my dentures the pain is so bad that all I can think of is how soon can I get back to the car or better yet home and take these things out. I will keep praying...thanks again

Hugs,
Hope

Thanks for the link Alffe...The thought has occurred to me many times. I found the link helpful. I have PTSD and have been living with it for many years and doing great. When I had to get dentures I thought it was the worse thing in the world! I was so embarrassed.Wearing dentures has such a stigma to me. Little did I know that in less than 6 months from then I would have this incapacitating Burning Mouth Syndrome. I am lucky in some ways I guess...I can find relief by taking my denture out. Now going around toothless is just more than I cope with. I do not wear them at home and now I don't go out much at all. I know I sound pitiful..I feel pitiful. I know I am in the middle of a full blown depressive episode. I just don't care. I need to have lower dentures made soon and I can't imagine my whole mouth burning. Now it's just my tongue and roof of my mouth and the gums that set in the denture.
Anyway, Thanks for listening

Fondly, Hope
