First Near Crisis

I am in the process of trying to pass my 51st kidney stone. This is all I can figure that triggered what happened to me two days ago. The first thing I noticed was that when I started to replace a gallon of milk in the refrigerator my left arm collapsed twice before I could raise it high enough to get it in. I switched arms and thought everything was OK. Next I noticed trouble swallowing the milk. Half would go down and the other half would go up or get stuck causing me to gag and cough. Next symptom was my eyes started "jumping" when I would look to right or left. All this progressed to the point that I couldn't push my self up off the couch without great difficulty. I should have noticed how quickly all this was progressing but I didn't. I went out to the car and collapsed trying to get in. It took my wife and my nephew to pull me up and get me into the car. I went to the doctor yesterday, got confirmation of the kidney stone and my mestinon upped again to 60mg 6 times per day. My symptoms are almost gone now, thank God. If it had been just a little worse my breathing would have been affected. I could still breathe, but I could not muster enough strength to blow my nose. This is the first time I have had such symptoms and I certainly didn't realise that they could come on in just a couple of hours. Do attacks like this usually come on lightning fast??

They can. Be careful with kidney stones. Looks like you have a lot more experience with them than I do, but the last time I had one, I ended up in ICU on a ventilator for 7 days. I had developed a bad infection and almost lost a kidney and stopped breathing because of the mg.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Thank you for the reply. I'll try to be more vigilant next time and act sooner.

I'm so sorry to hear that! They're pretty scary, aren't they?

Do/did your doctors test you for an infection when you get stones? They are common with that kind of irritation in the ureter! An infection can kick up MG, too.

I only had kidney stones once. I found that I had been having a reaction to dairy that caused "serous inflammation" in my body's mucus membranes. It might have contributed to the stones.

Do you drink a lot of water? That's the one main thing they always say to do if you have them. I think it might be a good idea to see an endocrinologist. There has to be a reason for why you are having so many of them! An endo can check your parathyroid gland, calcium, etc.

Also, they can be caused by inflammation. Dairy/cheese and beef can cause inflammation in the body. What's sort of funny is that some homeopaths say that the arm drops when holding a food we might be sensitive or allergic to! ;)

I really think having 51 stones is a bit too much! There has to be a reason for it. And your MG doesn't need the added stress.

Juanitad, I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience! You were very lucky not to have gotten worse.

The most expensive advice I've ever gotten has cost me over 30,000 dollars over the past 40 years: "Drink lots of water!" :) I've had every test known to man and no one can figure out why I produce so many stones. I'm to the point that I don't complain about them unless they won't pass. I've had to have 4 removed over the years. Hopefully this latest one will pass soon.

I assume this is what caused the aggravation of my mg. What startled me was how fast it all happened. Collapse was within 3 hours of the initial symptoms. Clearly I'm going to have to be careful. Much more careful than I supposed.

No infection showed up in the lab work, just blood in the urine. I've tried all the diets, including low calcium. Nothing has worked. I've been on medication, none have helped. I've drunk lots of lemonade. That tasted good but didn't do anything for the stones. I've just come to accept that I'm going to have them. Fortunately they are nowhere near as painful as the first few were.

Thanks for your post.

Things change over time. It would really be a good idea to consult with a new endocrinologist. Having that many kidney stones can be damaging your kidneys!!

I PASSED IT! :) Now I'm hoping my MG gets back to "normal"!

Thanks Annie!
