Should National Sr. Citizen's Day Be On The Calendar?
 

One of our newest members "Kimmie" is trying to get National Senior Citizen's Day on the calendar.

Please post your thoughts. :)

I'm not gung-ho about it, but sure, why not? We celebrate everything else.

Our senior citizens could use some recognition, I'm sure. Maybe a card and some flowers and a visit would warm their hearts.

To institute a national this or that day, one has only to appeal to Hallmark or American Greetings. Most of these pseudo holidays are their creations.

We have days for grandparents, bosses, teachers, secretaries, and talk-like-a-pirate, so what the heck, seniors can jump right in, the water's warm.

Honestly? No. We have enough Hallmark holidays. Can't we or don't we celebrate their birthday each year anyway? No offense, really, seriously, just saying.

I remember when my Grandma was alive. I was the first to send her a Grandparent's day card. She expected it every year after that. Of course I scored brownie points since I was the only one to send her something. That was my benefit. I also sent my MIL a MIL's day card, once. Only once.

It's all so much. Jim and I don't even do the Sweetest day, V-day, Easter, etc. thing. So, no, I don't think we need one even though I am respectful of all our elders.

IMHO- let's show concern everyday, Do the Hallmark thing but do real things all year long. While you're buying cards, don't forget a birthday card for the day that belongs to them alone. Doesn't have to be any big things. The senior citizen alone in the house down the street - visit, tea one afternoon or dinner at your house perhaps. Visit that old auntie - at home or nursing home. Consider the cost in old age - buy what they no longer can - special soap, nice stationary (they may not do e-mail), heck, get them a computer or help defray the cost of service for Internet and cable!. Drive them somewhere - a friend's, church, whatever (in my Irish American family it was funerals. I think my dad got points for getting his kids to them, his shining moment was getting us all to a funeral of someone we had never heard of - some kind of connection.). Look around their house. What can you do? Repair, clean........ I loved the idea of Twink recording her dad and his stories. I have questions that will never be answered now. Those who know are gone..

I voted yes...but good grief...please don't make a card holiday.

The seniors I know complain about getting so many cards..and what do with them. Keep them? More stuff...they are seniors and have gotten cards for years and years. They feel bad about throwing them away.

How about a phone call? Or a visit? Do a chore for them..help out..something besides giving clutter and making card sellers money. :rolleyes:

Reading Sandy's post makes me remember my brother who always said - New Year's, Valentine's, all for amateurs. I know I only celebrate the other BIG ones.

:confused: Goodday, the reason for Senior Citizens Day is not for a card. there is alot of seniors that could never have childern or grandchildern. It is for the seniors whom worked or land keap or jobs. and lost there limbs or machiney.The ones the whom keap the good U.S.A. heare. and to me they are better than a Groundhog day and april fools day . But i wanted to say thank you for your input god bless kimmie

It might be a good idea Kimmie, if you post exactly what your idea is for Senior Day.

I can see where everyone would get the same idea, since basically most of these national days end up being card giving days.
