Just joined... possible vaccine related neuropathy

Hi all!

On July 2nd I was given a dose of Imovax Rabies vaccine due to a low risk post-exposure dog bite.

36 hours after my first dose I woke up with a burning sciatic/hip pain on my left side.... that cold tingling pain moved to my lower back around the L5-S1 area and subsided into a back ache 8 hours later.

Since then I have had a back ache that comes and goes... mostly when sitting. I have an occasional sciatic type feeling down my left leg. My glutes/hip have been burning from time to time. My feet have also started feeling like they are going to sleep when I sit. Also my two inner fingers on bath hands feel like they are going to sleep at random times.

A week later my joints started hurting at random times... mostly at night and in the morning... I have also experienced joint pain.

Yesterday I just started to get a burning and tingling pins and needle feeling under my skin on my head, neck, forearms and back. So far this has been very light and has been in the afternoon and evenings. Yay! More stuff!

The Doctor at the office where the Rabies Vaccine was administered says the back pain/burning is in no way correlated. I saw a neurologist for the back pain and sciatic type issues on July 16 and she said the same thing.

I just started on B-12, Magnesium and Ginger Extract.

Past issues include an annular tear on l5-s1 20 years ago (last issue with my back was 2003) and I had a bad reaction to Cipro back in December 2012 that I healed from in 15-30 days. That was mostly insomnia, joint and tendon issues.

Hi ATX_Man, Welcome.

Is there a question in there? There's a wealth of information on Imovax side effects, though I wasn't able to find anything on their duration other than anecdotal. Here are some lists of side effects and reports of adverse effects. I hope they may be helpful to you.

Rabies Vaccine (Systemic)

The following side effects are associated with Imovax Rabies Vaccine IM:

RABIES (IMOVAX) Safety Reports

Drug Report: IMOVAX RABIES (RABIES VACCINE)

Your reaction to Cipro took 30 days to resolve; it has not been that long yet since your Imovax injection.

Cipro has a known connection to peripheral neuropathy; see ~MEDICATIONS~~ That May Cause Peripheral Neuropathy

I don't know if any of what you're experiencing could be delayed from the Cipro, or re-activated by the Imovax.

I see that you've already found & posted to the Peripheral Neuropathy forum; folks there should have some ideas on how to move forward and hopefully recover from some/all of these symptoms.

Best Wishes,

Doc

According to a rabies vaccine website "Important safety information
Anaphylaxis, encephalitis including death, meningitis, neuroparalytic events such as encephalitis, transient paralysis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, myelitis, and retrobulbar neuritis; and multiple sclerosis have been reported to be temporally associated with the use of RabAvert vaccine."

Funny... Multiple sclerosis temporarily associated. There is nothing temporary about MS.

I see my neurologist on Monday.
