Duration of positive effects of DBS
Has anyone had DBS Surgery 5 or more years ago. I am trying to find out how long the benefits last i.e. motor and cognitive. Are there any studies that follow the time line of the positive and negative longer term results?

Yes, it's been 13 yrs since I had DBS. There's been no more dyskinesia ever since it was done. I was practically bouncing off walls when my meds used to kick in, either that or be in an 'off' state! I had dystonia if off for long enough which was also very distressing and that's after many yrs post DBS returned a little it's much milder compared to before the op. I have had a return of rigidity and slowness but I know having had DBS it is much better and it masks the return of symptoms. I had an episode where my batteries went flat and in the few days it took for them to be replaced an off could mean not being able to move just speak which was a good reminder of how thankful I am for this procedure. I've heard many studies say it turns back the clock by 5 yrs too. My memory is no better or worse than previously (thats what I think anyway!) Best wishes. |
