Has anyone tried Buspar for nerve flares?

I posted over the weekend about an awful debilitating flare that has hit me out of left field this past weekend. My neurologist just suggested I try Buspar to calm the nerves down.I cannot find a side use for nerve pain on the internet. It is also called Buspirone and is a medication for anxiety (anxiolytic) that works by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain. Has anyone tried Buspar and if so, any side effects? Does it help?

Hi cat,
I tried to find some information for you but haven't been able to get any. Hopefully, Mrs. D or others will be able to help you out.

I'm sorry you are in such a bad flare. Keeping you in my prayers.
Hopeful

This drug has actions on one type of serotonin receptor and also on D2 (dopamine) receptor. This might help with pain.

You'll have to keep us informed as to how it works for you.
Buspar in general is not a commonly used drug for anxiety either. It just never really caught on much.

Just an update that I do not feel any improvements while taking the Buspar. will keep all informed in case anyone else has been looking into the use of this medication.

Just a side note... I have Klonopin (Clonazepam) for anxiety, I found it worked with nerve pain that nothing else would touch. I don't think I've ever had nerve pain as severe as other people, but enough to keep me awake. My neurologist concurred that Klonopin (Clonazepam) has a 'muscle relaxing' effect. Don't know whether that might help anyone or not.

Another side note...I'm on a low dose of amitriptyline at night to help me get to sleep/sleep through nerve pain that I get in my legs. It has helped but I occasionally have nights of more severe pain that keeps me awake. I asked for something fast- and short-acting for those occasions but my rheumatologist prescribed a muscle relaxer instead, tinazidine to take nightly. I haven't started it yet but found reports of it being effective with nerve pain.

I am supposing you've tried the supplements Benfotiamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid, those helped me a lot too and they aren't more drugs to take. Helped particularly with nerve pain at night.

I started on amitriptyline, plaquenil, and a whole bunch of supplements a month ago but didn't want to do too many new things at once. Those two are my next planned addition; I'm glad to know they might help with this specific issue.

I'd move them to the front of the line, my humble opinion. The first thing that stopped was nerve pain coming on just before bedtime. Eventually, just on the Bentofiamine, most of it stopped at night. Then I added the Alpha Lipoic Acid, even more went away. I was really surprised. Sometimes if I eat the wrong thing, I still have a problem... mostly the wrong oils; coconut oil, canoba oil, etc... then I rely on my Klonopin I told you about.
