I just started using Effexor (Venlafaxine)

I recently saw a dual specialized neuro-psychiatrist. He put me on a dose of Effexor, which is a drug used to treat anxiety disorders and depression. However, he uses it for concussion patients (I myself had a brain tumor). There are tons of people that use it to treat vestibular migraines. Today I took my first dose.

I start off on 37.5mg once a day for a week and then move on to 75mg once a day for 6 weeks.

After my first dose I experienced severe anxiety, heat, nausea and some mild heart pain for about 5 minutes. Luckily most of those side effects wore off after 5 minutes or so. However, I continue to experience mild nausea throughout the day.

I can't say it really reduced symptoms after one day. It mainly just gave me a high and improved my mood a bit.

Before my first dose I actually woke up feeling like it was a going to be one of my better days. Good nights rest, no nausea or vertigo. Very mild to nil congestion. However, the Effexor made me feel worse (not terrible though). So I likely would have felt better if I didn't take it. Not artificially in a better mood though ;)

I'll report back in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the info. What is the Effexor supposed to help you with? Dizziness? Were you diagnosed with vestibular migraines?

I think primarily anxiety, headaches and stress. Possibly for decreasing dizziness too.

Edit:

I wasn't ever formally diagnosed with vestibular migraines. One doctor initially said I might be having vestibular migraines. While, another doctor refuted him. The most recent doctor never really said I did as far as I remember. However, he did say he prescribes this drug to concussion patients.

If it isn't a vestibular migraine, it is something else that is related to my impaired vestibular system.

I've been waiting forever for someone to say that they take this medication. I was prescribed this medicine also but I have not taken it yet. My neurologist said it's supposed to fight fatigue anxiety and depression. One of my biggest complaint is fatigue. I also get pains in my head whenever I get too worked up about something. Also the pains are in my body too it's kind of like a nerve pain just in random spots all over my head and body. I do feel like maybe I'm a little more depressed since my head injury but that's to be expected since you're outcasted or at least I have been. Please make sure you reply to this one I will be following it to know how it's working for you.

So far I notice it fights the fatigue slightly. I get a sinus like headache and dizziness after long days (and bad days). This drug seems to cloud out the negative sideffects. It's not perfect. On day three I still have a dilated pupils, a slight feeling of nausea, loss of appetite and loss of sex drive

cerebellarmaniac 05-08-2016 11:18 AM

The drug isn't perfect. All I'll say is that after 2 days is that it lessens the pain, and I am less bothered by my dizziness. I fear I won't be able to tolerate a 75mg dose. 37.5mg seems to be more than enough.

Please keep me updated if you don't mind. Maybe you can stay on the Smaller dose. Thanks so much

Hi...I just wanted to pop into this conversation to let you both know my experience with Effexor. I recently had to change my medication from Effexor to something new. My case is probably much different, because I've fought depression which they figure is hereditary, for the last 20 years or so. For about twelve years I was on 150 mugs of Effexor. (they told me that was the regular dosage). Anyways it worked wonders for me as far as depression went. Like I said I was on it for years.
Here is the interesting part. Along comes my concussion and PCS....7 months after the concussion I went back to work...had a full relapse within a month and a half, but along with the relapse came Anxiety! Completely new to me. Anyways, the Effexor wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I was feeling completely hopeless so my doc switched me to a new medication altogether which seems to be helping me more. It is called Trintellix.

Thanks this is important to me. Once I'm done with classes I'm. Going to try something tonhelp.myself. my neuro said it helps with fatigue, I've been having a lot of that lately also since my concussion and I've been more depressed but I do suffer from anxiety which I kind of had before the concussion I feel like it's a little worse
