I'm in the SE of England - which surgeons have you used in London and the SE?

I'm looking at Michael Fox at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore (although I can see him privately at the Wellington) or Ian Loftus/ Mr Constantinos Kyriakides at the London Bridge Hospital. I am lucky enough to have private healthcare through work but not sure yet whether I need a vascular or neurosurgeon as have both symptoms.

I saw a consultant in orthopaedic MEDICINE rather than a surgeon (Dr Michael Hutson-has written several books on limb disorders, he has clinics in London and all over the UK tel 07538389853). The trouble with surgeons, esp private is that they're inclined to operate without taking a holistic approach to the patient (i know, I used to be one !) I went to an upper limb surgeon initially who you would have thought would have considered TOS ,but didn't and performed unnecessary elbow surgery. If you're confident its TOS and would be prepared to have surgery then make sure you pick a specialist with a specific interest in TOS.Heres a list of TOSers in the UK. i had my surgery at Guys and St Thomas' under the vascular team but there was an orthopaedic surgeon in theatre in case needed. My consultant was called Professor Burnard who has now retired but it is still an extremely good unit for vascular surgery if subclavian artery is compressed too

sorry forgot to add - i had neurogenic and vascular TOS but they still felt best done by vascular team. my neurologist is great, Dr Paul Holmes, and he still follows me up and has been great. He does private work too based at London Bridge, I think

Hi - I'm new to this forum and have thoracic outlet syndrome (both neuro and vascular) and am based in the UK just outside London. I am looking for a surgeon to be referred to and was wondering if any of you guys could recommend any. The neurophysiologist who performed my nerve conduction tests and EMGs mentioned that the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore might be a good bet so I was wondering if chivers1977 or anyone else did go there? I'd be so grateful for any help here as extensive googling doesn't seem to bring up any answers.

An orthopaedic surgeon and a vascular surgeon jointly conducted 30 operations for thoracic outlet syndrome in 27 patients, having done the preoperative assessments in conjunction with a neurologist. Anterior scalenectomy was performed by the supraclavicular route except in one case where the infraclavicular route was used. The further surgical procedure was tailored to the abnormalities identified-i.e. resection of cervical rib or band, or medial scalenectomy.Thefirstribwas spared.Atmedianfollow-upof37months(range3-228)resultswerejudged excellent or good on 26/30 sides (87%); on the three occasions when scalenectomy alone was performed, the results were only fair or poor. There were no major complications and no patient required reoperation. The long- term outcome in this series suggests that, with multidisciplinary assessment and two-surgeon operative treatment, good results can be obtained by the supraclavicular route without resection of the first rib.

Thoracic outlet syndrome surgery or not?
 

Hello. Has anyone had thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in the UK? How do I find out who the best surgeon is? By that I mean with most experience and fewest complications. I guess it is neurogenic TOS, because have just seen neurosurgeon who suggested surgery. Don't want it if it'll make the pain worse!! :winky:
