Autonomic neuropathy

Hi All,

I'm a male in my 40s and I started having problems with neuropathy last year with fairly mild motor and sensory symptoms (tingling, fasciculations) - symmetrical. I had all the usual tests - nothing abnormal. My Neuro diagnosed inflammatory peripheral neuropathy (response to a virus) and said it would decline over the next 12-18 months. It did until i had a further 'relapse' at the end of August 2012 - this time it presented as severe palpitations and what i think is POTS - my heart rate can fluctuate significantly even at rest. Tiredness +++ and breathless on exertion. Also, elbow pain radiating down ulnar nerve in left arm - repsonded well to Naproxen. Facial flushing.

I've been referred back to the Neuro and Cardiology but i was wondering if anyone has experience of Autonomic Peripheral Neuropathy? I believe most types also have sensory/motor involvement.

I cant find much in terms of autonomic PN from searching the threads. Some people have some symptoms but they dont appear to be the main symptom.

Thanks

Andy

Autonomic neuropathy can be caused by several different conditions, including diabetes and autoimmune disease. It can effect heart rate, BP, temperature control, GI function/motility, balance, endocrine function, etc.

It can come in waves in response to trauma, surgery, infection, etc. If the cause is know, then treatment would be to based on that condition...like diabetes. Otherwise, treatment is supportive to help control symptoms of systems effected. There are many options for effective heart rate and BP control.

Tilt table is usual test for POTS.

Sensory/motor involvement is common, but it depends on the underlining cause.

I have autonomic neuropathy as the cause of my Dysautonomia/POTS.

I am doing very well after three and a half years. Supplements and diet to heal the nerves. Good doctors that know how to heal with supplements and diet.

I have had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 20 years, then I was doing great finally, then I took Levaquin and a couple of months later, had surgery. I can't take med for pain so surgery is very stressful and painful.

A few months after that I got ill a few times, unable to stand, thought I would pass out, then one day my body stopped working. No longer could stand without fainting, severe nausea all day and night, high heartrate, unable to cool off, always very hot and many other problems.

Bedridden, then wheelchair for several years. This summer I made a lot of progress. I am doing so much better now, walking much more.
