nortriptyline HCL 25MG CAP
 

this is a new medication prescribed to me
because i awake from my throbbing in my knees hips shoulder
elbows head
have had been experiencing headache
over a month the area where the hematoma
grew is still the main sore spot
to the point i scratch the painful area
it never went away
it is only somethings
i live with
so far i don't notice any difference
with
the new drug
only on it for a week
i'll give it some more time
no side effects
thank you Lord
so many meds
to be continued

Hi Eva,

Nortriptyline is of the older tricyclic class of antidepressants. They are often prescribed in light doses (like yours) for chronic & neuropathic pain, particularly at bedtime to help patients sleep the night through.

I'm taking amitriptyline 10 mg. myself for just that purpose, and it works quite well as long as I go to bed within a few minutes after taking it. If I wait more than about an hour, it sometimes doesn't/will not work for me. It's worked for me from day 1, so if it doesn't help you any within the next week or so, I'd call your doctor & let him/her know. S/he may try switching you to another or upping the dose.

If you are also taking gabapentin, there is some evidence that gabapentin and nortriptyline may work more effectively in combination for neuropathic pain than either does separately, and it may be this combination that your doctor is seeking to balance.

interesting you should mention that
as my last monthly visit to my pain
specialist and on that visit
i had my eldest child Saraeve 32
suffered her first grand-maul seizures
April 30th 2003 and has been on all
seizure meds including neurontin
she having been a all one could think of
even removing part of her occipital lobe
and in the end a VNS Implant permanent
bilnding in her right eye
got off subject
he did mention neurontin
i opted not to take the neurotin
in fear of side affects
however because no side affects
with this new drug in my system
i might give it a try
and oh boy have i learned much
about the mysterious brain
she is an inspiration
self published book of poetry
earned the title "slam master"
again off subject
bottom line
i will talk to my daughter
and doctor next visit
as she too understands cocktail
meds to do the job
yes i read up on it
happy to see fibromyaligia
is not perceived to be
to be in our "head"

I've never had any problems with it
 

I've been taking Nortriptyline for about 5 years for nerve pain in my lower back and I've never experienced any negative issues with it. It has been a wonderful drug for me as far as the physical effects. I have nerve damage in my lower spine as well as Sciatica and the pain is unbearable at times and the Nortriptyline is the most effective drug at relieving the nerve pain.

I stopped taking it for about 6 months a couple of years ago and started again because the pain became unbearable and nothing else was effective at controlling the pain -- it works far better for nerve pain than narcotics, which I take for bone and muscle pain in my arms and legs due to fractures and soft tissue damage.

Having taken it now twice, I will note that it takes about 3-4 weeks for the Nortriptyline to start to be effective.

However, if you really feel the problems are caused by the Nortriptyline (ie the problems started when you started taking it), by all means see please go see your doctor ASAP and ask for something else. I am sorry you if are having issues with it. I have taken drugs which disagreed with me and it is very frightening experience.

Glad to hear your having some luck with amitriptyline. I'm taking amitriptyline too for small fiber neuropathic pain. I started 2 mos ago taking only
5 mgs. I split a 10 in half so I could get used to any side effects. (Im very sensitive to all medications :( ). I just started taking 10 mgs. 3 nights ago. So far it doesn't make me drowsy right away like you, but it does help me to sleep a little better. I usually take it a couple of hours before I go to sleep.
Are you taking it for pain or to sleep? You said 10 mgs. works quite well for you, was wondern how you meant that. Would be glad to know if only 10 mgs. is helping you. Do you take anything else with it for your pain? I also take 300 mgs. lyrica, which is not working so well. So the med starting working for you right away. I will give mine a couple of weeks, I hope I do as well as you have. Thanks
PS I just wanted to add that my neurologist gave me a script for Nortriptyline also, he said to try if the Amitrip dosent help..when are your thoughts?

Glad to hear the Nortriptyline is working good for your nerve pain. I get skeptical with these drugs. I recently started taking Amitriptyline 10 mgs. I started with a "baby" dose .5 for about 3 mos on & off. Trying to get used to some side effects. I just started taking 10 mgs, 3 nights ago. It helps with sleeping, but its not doing much for my small fiber neuropathic pain. :( I also take 300mgs Lyrica. Do you think the Nortriptyline could work well with Lyrica too? My Neurologist also gave me a script for Nortriptyline , in case the Ami doesn't help. How much do you take? I just hope I dont have to get up to a high dosage for some relief. I have also taken drugs and had a very frightening experience. Thank you.
