FESS surgery and apicoectomy

Hi
i understand Bryanna could be of assistance.
this is my very first post so not sure how is works... (apologies)

i had FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) on the 21/5/2012 and then an apicoectomy on the 31/5/2012.

the apicoectomy was on tooth #15 and the sinus membrane was perforated.

i have a huge post nasal drip and the mucus is extremely thick.
because of the perforation, i am not allowed to blow my nose for 6 weeks!! i have to clear this mucous and all other "stuff" because of my sinus surgery, but i cant and the post nasal drip seems to be getting worse and it is not clearing.

please can you advise what to do to clear the mucus or make it thinner so that it can clear?

regards
Ciska

Hi Ciska,

If you have not done so already, my suggestion is to call the surgeon who did the FESS, speak to him directly (not the receptionist) and inform him of the apico surgery, the perforation into the sinus, the heavy mucus and the post op instructions given by the dentist.

In my professional opinion, apicoectomies are a barbaric, pointless dental surgery because they can not cure the infection residing inside of your tooth. Which means the tooth will continue to be infected and need to readdressed at some point in time. By any chance, were you informed of that? Unfortunately, most of the time, the patient is not informed. Also, having the apico so closely to the FESS, again in my opinion, was a bit reckless on their part because the bacteria and infection from both sources will be difficult to manage in such close proximity.

I would not wait to call the ENT surgeon..... hopefully he will have a resolution for you. I wish I could be of help to you... but this needs to be addressed by the ENT surgeon.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing....
