LTD and SSDI
 

Hello All,

My husband was finally approved for long term disability through his work and now I am curious if that has any bearing on SSDI and getting approved? Long story short, my husband (59 yrs) had a stroke and anoxic event in the beginning of this year. That resulted in a traumatic brain injury from the loss of oxygen to his brain. Finally after numerous neurologists and all kinds of testing he has been diagnosed with Dementia which includes long and short term memory loss. It is very profound and most days he can not remember the previous day or anything for that matter.

I have submitted for him the social security application and numerous reports including the adult function report and his primary care doctor did the mental function report. We turned in all doctors medical records. I am not sure how long it will take for SSDI to determine if they feel his is disabled?!? Do any of you know if I can or should give SSDI the approval letter from the LTD company? Would this help in any way to secure SSDI?

I have been reading this wonderful website and do not see anything similar so thought i could reach out to the people who have lived this nightmare and may have some knowledge.

SS won't consider the insurance company's decision, they'll evaluate his medical records and make their own decision.

Depending on the LTD policy, a portion or even the full amount of the SSDI benefit will be subtracted--although the Medicare benefits wouldn't be effected. The LTD policy generally has a requirement that you apply to reduce their exposure.

I would submit it and did myself submit something similar in the past. if it is favorable for him it wont hurt. SS wont base their decision on what the LTD company decided but it is another piece of evidence that your husband is disabled.

Lit Love yes, the LTD company definitely wants us to apply and receive SSDI so that they do not have to pay a penny more than they would have to.

Echoes thank you for your input. I am going to submit it only because we have seen another neurologist since all the medical records were turned in. This Alzheimer's and Dementia Dr. also said the same diagnosis and I want that on his medical record along with the other neurologists confirming yes my husband is disabled since he can not remember yesterday or even the same day things and conversations that happened :(

You should continue submitting new medical evidence directly. The process takes months to years long... If you have a local SS office, it's a good idea to walk it in and get a date stamped receipt for anything important.
