Online and Book information for family members with curious children...What's wrong?
Online:
Middle Tennessee (USA) Chapter of the APDA has a Kid's Corner. http://www.mtparkinsons.org/kidscorner/index.php Kids | K-6 | 6-8 | PD Quiz | FAQs | Links | Parents Books: "My Mommy has PD...but it's okay" "What's Wrong with Grandpa" http://www.parkinson.bc.ca/qs/page/5181/5138/-1 Honestly, neither are favorits of mine, but they are out there if anyone needs help with explainations for children. I'll Hold Your Hand So You Won't Fall: A Child's Guide To Parkinson's Disease http://www.amazon.com/Hold-Your-Hand.../dp/1873413130 I was just commenting to a friend, after I initially posted this thread, that we need to write children's book. Tired to be age appropriate. Kaylee, you are so right about the age thing. I don't care for the first two, and the Ali book is better. The problem with all the books is the age and the voice. One is about "my mom". One is about "grandpa". Why do they have to be about a specific person. Write the book in a way that the adult reading to the child can inject the person they are speaking about. Thoughts?? |
Best Way to teach Children is First Hand
Hi Carolyn,
For about 8 years I worked as a volunteer in the St. Paul Public School system as my husband is a band teacher there. I would help the woodwind players with fingerings, check instruments, give private lessons to the ones who were having problems keeping up, etc. A few of the children showed fear of my shaking, but after I explained to them that I had Parkinson's disease, and after I demonstrated my playing, the fear went away and we could focus on our common love of music. One of the best ways to inform the public at large is to just get out there and volunteer in your community and let them see your gifts so they realize they have things in common with you. Love, Vicky |
