Vitamin D?

Has anyone had an experience with low Vitamin D causing increasing overall pain?? Was it relieved when levels increased? How high did the levels need to be in order to feel relief. Any personal experience would be great as I was recently told that my Vit D is extremely low but have not seen a difference with pain as of yet. Thanks.

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

If you are using the RX D2 your doctor gave you, you might never see any results. That form is old--over 40yrs--- and since new research says D3 OTC is the most effective.

We have had some pain relief on our Peripheral Neuropathy board with fixing D levels.

The new normal you want as a goal is 50 (US units). That is the lowest number in the new normal range.

There are studies showing reduction in the need for pain meds, in chronic pain patients, but I haven't seen any complete reversals.

Here is our Medical thread with videos and the newest info on our Vitamin forum:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread92116.html

The last page has the newest Dr. Oz show's videos, and clearly illustrates how he flubbed up a most critical subject! IMO.

Did you get your test results from your doctor? If so post it here.

My doc actually prescribed 5,000IU daily of D3 for me. Im not sure of the exact numbers but he said that he wanted it at atleast 50 and said I was at 12....maybe hes talking about percentages? Not sure but I can find out for sure next visit. I guess I will just continue on this for now, just didnt know if anyone had had any good experiences with it. My pain has taken a turn for the worse lately and then all of a sudden D levels are down...so I wasnt sure if they could be directly related.

Thanks for posting that!

5,000 IU D3 is about right. You may need a bit more, depending on your weight. Heavier patients need more.

But you are close with that dose. You wouldn't believe how many people get tested and are given the next to useless D2 50,000 IU RX ... It takes about 3 months to get accurate retest values.

I did gain a BIT too much with my last pregnancy..oops :-) So I may need more lol! Thanks for the input, im going to keep taking it and hope in three months I feel better!

You will want to consider your children too.

The website

www.grassrootshealth.net has some recommendations for children and Vit D3. This site also has some ideas:

I hope you consider giving them some also...it comes in drop form for easy administration.

How did it make you sick razzle?

mrsD 05-05-2011 09:30 AM

Yes, I wonder in what way you were ill...?

The amount of D in a capsule is so tiny... really... micrograms.

The units look big, but in reality the amount is tiny.

1000IU D3 is .025mg or 25micrograms

so 4000 IU is .1mg or 100micrograms.

People getting ill on Vit D? Only thing comes to my mind is sarcoidosis. There are restrictions on use of Vit D because it is not clear if patients with this rare condition can safely take external D supplements.

Here is an article that addresses side effects.
http://www.easy-immune-health.com/Vi...e-Effects.html

Side effects are just not common.

I started with 10,000 IU D3 every other day and I have NOTHING in the way of side effects.

The liquigel D2 given by doctors on RX, has a small amount of sorbitol in it, but even that is tiny and unlikely to cause GI upset.

Mizzpinkiepie 05-05-2011 10:58 AM

MrsD- I didnt realize how small the dosage in an IU actually was....I have been getting sick but thats a usual SE of the pain for me so im not convinced its from the D...
