new guy w/parkinsons

:)Hello all, I have been diagnosed for almost 10 years, retired on disablity for 7years and moved to west kentucky last year from N.California for various reasons [easy living ] . My neurologist has me on "zonegran" 200mg a day and "sinement" 2-25/100 a day and I suppliment with coq10, b-12, omega 3, bee pollen, NADH, green tea and a good blast of "cannabis" morning, noon and night. That said, " Mr parkinsons" still comes creeping along! The "Zonigran" is a new effort, it is for seizures and new to parkinsons, seems to help with " mental " health, depression, grounding. But I need the "siniment" to get moving, otherwise, dead in the water so to speak!
I would like to hear from anyone who has expierence with cannibis use for relief of "parkinsons" symptims!

:)

thanks for this, Chemar

welcome Jeff!
In answer to your cannabis question, in a word "no". it does make you not care as much about your situation though!!! I often wonder if heavy pot use back in the 70's had anything to do with my young onset PD.
So how is life in Western KY? We may retire to the Lexington area when my wife quits working in 10-15 years.

Charlie, 57, DX;ed in 1990 age 40. bilateral DBS-STN in 2002.

I thought it was a commonly known issue that cannabis use can cause psychosis, lack of motivation and other long term mental health issues.
Some anti parkinson drugs can cause psychosis, paronioa and hallucinations but unlike cannabis they're needed to function and the unwanted side effects go when the drug is stopped.

On the subject of relief from symptoms and possible use of cannibinoids in treatment of Parkinson's here's a
Google search on marijuana and parkinson's

As far as marijuana causing psychosis, that has been limited to young users who are already predisposed to psychosis.
Marijuana-Induced Psychosis May Foretell Future Episodes
Studies link psychosis, teenage marijuana use- Some adolescents carry genetic risk

And "somebody I know" with already existing neurotransmitter issues finds that is has the paradoxical effect of increasing motivation...

Jeffrey- You seem to be old enough to be past the age of onset for schizophrenia. If you're staying home and not out driving around, I don't think it's going to hurt you.
Although using your email address as your logon does show some impairment of judgment... ;)

Okay, I was gonna leave this one alone. But, since it gave me both a smile and a chuckle (see end of my reply), I feel obligated.
Jeff, everybody here is different - age/symptoms/drug reactions/moods/daily PD monsters, but we all have the same disease. So, whats good 4 me might not be good 4 you.
The herb buzz can create the effect that a lot of PD'ers are tryin like 'ell to avoid!
The whole motivation thing, sit in the chair and watch the entire "Today Show". Next thing ya know, half the day has gone and you're still wearin pajamas-havn't even showered yet, uh-oh whats this?......my legs are stiff from sittin here to long.
Difficulty remembering things, did I take both of my meds or just one? Where's the remote? What's my Neurotalk username/password? When did I agree to a cat?
Cotton mouth from all the meds, or slober on your chin from the PD.
Slowness in the simplest of task, if they ever get completed.
Mild depression. The list could go on.

Enter the devil's advocate,
After a stressed to max day and the meds getting ready to win you first prize in a mjf look-a-like contest, really what's a little leafage gonna hurt at this point?
Is it instant relief from a looming panic attack, sure is.
If it's going to be a cold rainy day outside, why not be happy inside. Pull out a couple of Foghat albums (NOT cd), and have a "scooby snack" with a smile.
We are each unique in some way with PD.
Now my questions,
After being out 7 yrs, what part(symptom) of " Mr parkinsons" is creeping out that is driving the concern? What side effect are you trying to avoid/induce/prevent?

As I said in the beginning, thank you. You gave me a nice chuckle with the whole logon, ID thing. There's not a day that goes by that I don't do something goofy and get caught. I know that sometimes my actions provides others with entertainment. Yesterday it was your turn ;)

Now that's entertainment - what a riot - thanks! Creativity, silliness and humor can often be misidentified as psychosis so be careful...lol.

I have nothing...

against cannabis as a drug, mostly because there is no known lethal dose. That's far from true with society's legal drug , alcohol. I used to smoke it when i was young, mostly because it made the time pass quickly and "painlessly" while doing a dirty job.
Having kids stopped further use. I mean you stink of pot, everbody around you can tell your "stoned", and it doesn't fit the "respectable working father" image. I smoked it several times during my "PD life" and found that it greatly increased my "bradykinesia", and made me paranoid. I can see that some people really like it and that it is a great antidepressant for them. There IS a reason why we possess endogenous cannabioid receptors, and the cannabinoid system is linked to mood. I think that pot users should not be persected, and it's status should be like that of alcohol, controlled, taxed and laws dealling with public use. I think that it is a sin that so many people are in jail for pot use, when it is such an innocuous substance. And we have to answer for the fact that it is part of the "culture" of blacks and hispanics, who bear the brunt of long prison sentences. Prohibition and prison are wasting lives, not pot smoking. cs

shocked

That one would try alterative medicine however illegal to ease a painful disease, paranoia! why no I would rather just sit there and pop those perscription pills, like some of them didn't make me "psycotic" so don't be afraid, it was a legitiment question!
By the way, don,t confuse computer ineptness as being "high" well ok, go ahead!! But one can make a mistake and correct it AKA/ jeffrey/
So, I did read positive replys from other pwp,s and am looking foward to an practical exchange of information with other pwp,s. How about "Zonogran" anyone taking that?
newguy/aka buzzz.

K.Ibsen 11-08-2007 01:06 AM

I don't know anything about Zonogran.

The cannabis part sounds good though. If it were to help, I see no logic in denying relief from suffering when the source of the relief is both natural and available. It should be legalized, regulated, taxed and demystified. I haven't tried it since I've had PD. I've been wondering though. Even if it just let me forget about my problems for a while, it might be worth it.
