Nerves heal 1 inch/month...how does that work

I keep reading nerves heal one inch per month but how does it work? Does it heal from the top or the bottom or all together? How can I tell if they are healing? If I have damaged nerves in my neck, shoulder, arm down to wrist, will I see improvements in my neck or wrist first?
Thank you! I'm 14 weeks post op and trying desperately to get my head wrapped around all this. It helps to understand what is going on.

Oh....I just don't think it that easy as a predictive value. Yes, some nerves do heal at different rates, but there are so many moving parts to this equation that I don't think you will find a reliable answer here! It depends if it is a sensory or motor nerve that you are thinking about, where it is, how long it was denervated for and then there is the Seddon classification on top of all that. You should really rely on your doc for those answers, reliably. Good luck to you!
