Melatonin
 
I made a post about my horrid sleep issues and how I am and have tried so many meds for this and still am up. Someone suggested melatonin and I was wondering if others could tell their experiences. Are there any reasons not to take this or the worst thing is that I would still be up? I have seen a range of dose to take as well so was wondering about that. Thanks

there's not so many options in the herbal/natural supplement category for those with sleep disorders/insomnia. melatonin is one of them, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work right away.

It may take awhile to be metabolized and go through your system so that your body processes it, and uses it maybe even the next night or the night after you take it. Or it just may take a night or two to see the effects. Many people get relief from less than 1 mg of melatonin a night. so breaking up the tablet would be worth it.

of course there's the b vitamins too, you want to be sure to have them in you so you metabolize the melatonin correctly. if you're under 40, you may not see results from the melatonin, but if you're over 40, definitely look into it.

seems from our experience that different people react differently to melatonin and especially to the *dose*

my son and I cannot take more than 300-600 MICROgrams
and only on occasion
if we take more it leaves us feeling horribly groggy next day and sometimes waking up after just a few hrs sleep feeling restless

My husband tho can take 1-3 MILIgrams and sleep well and feel great!

starting at lowest dose of 300 microgms and then working up as needed may be right way to do it

Thank. I am so frustrated. I was literally crying from lack of sleep today for so many nights and I can tell today will be the same. Anyhow Chemar I am clueless on dose so I think I saw 3mg dose at the store. Is that ok or is that the high dose your husband takes? I am sorry to sound clueless. I am going to look at Walmart if they have any. They have cheap vitamins there. I should of looked at WHole Foods today but can go back. Thanks

if you really want good ones go to GNC and get the sublingual 1mg kind, with that you can even break off a piece and just use that. but if you decide to go the 3 mg route, you can quarter that, and that would be .75 mg, or even make an eighth of that so it would be .38 mg.

Thank you. So you think 1mg or even half is the amount to start with? Is it safe though to take up to 3mg? So confusing these dosages

its safe but def not necessary. most people get results with low dosages like chemar said. less is more in this regard, as melatonin is secreted by your pineal gland in low amounts anyways, so a low dose of melatonin, is just enough. 3mg is kind of an overkill, but won't harm you, just expect that you won't need to take it for a few days, cuz it'll still be there in your system.

HI, Daniella... I am online today testing out the 3G on my husband's computer. I don't have much battery left...but I did look in here.

I'd like to ask if you still are using that Seroquel? Atypical antipsychotics can cause agitation in some patients, and I recall you were using Seroquel at night? It is called akathesia
(I am not spelling this right) which is a wakeful need to move around. So it may be the drug side effects bothering you.

For me melatonin only works when I use it regularly...it seems to stablize after a week or so. I often sleep less long but have better quality of sleep. It does not work well for me here or there...it has to be used every night.
I use the 3mg...since less does nothing for me.

If you have a carbohydrate snack before going to bed, you may sleep a bit better... carbs release serotonin which helps.

I've been using melatonin at night now, since the new information about Type II diabetes was published. Melatonin receptors are in the pancreas and linked to increased blood sugar in patients with insulin resistance. They are going to do
studies on Type II diabetics as a result.

right, but going along with what mrs D said. i would suggest if you're under 40 not taking 3mg or more of the melatonin. but definitely if you're over 40 you would definitely need the 3mg, as you're body stops producing enough of it.

Thanks Bruegger and Mrs D. I really appreciate it cause I can't stand this lack of sleep. Everday I am out of the bed by 3am. I just can't lay there anymore awake and many nights I watch tv the whole night. I am taking serequel 300mg. See I feel it has helped with evening my moods and though I am still struggling I am doing way better so I hate to take away anything. I am also on klonopin,trazadone and she said I could try ativan if I stop the klonopin for a day to see how I do but then could take all. It seems like so many meds and that is not including neurontin and cymbalta. I went from taking nothing to all this but overall am able to do more physically and mentally I am less nuts so to speak. I am 30 well almost 31. So there is no harm though in taking it. I will try to find the 1 to start and that was I can just take up to 3.
I hope you are enjoying yourself Mrs D and it was very kind of you to take time out and thanks again Bruegger too.
