Tegratol
 

Do any of you take tegratol (CARBAMAZEPINE)? what can you say about it?

I have not been on this but was suggested a drug that works the same and now I forgot the name but has less side effects then this one for my pain but I went on neurontin again instead.
This med I have heard they use like neurontin for nerve pain. Are you on any meds or have you tried any others like Lyrica,neurontin,etc?

Tegretol is a very old drug. Originally it was put on the market for seizure control. But then it gradually moved over into nerve disorders/pain. For a long time it was the only treatment for trigeminal neuralgia.

It has side effects, and interacts with other drugs. Its more modern cousin Trileptal is a bit more expensive but less problematic with drug interactions.

You need careful monitoring while taking it. It can affect the blood, and also sodium metabolism. But if your doctor watches you, you should be okay for a trial.

I have been on it for 30 years for my epilepsy - I stay on it because it gives me good seizure control and I value my drivers licence. Changing drugs and risking break through seizures would loose me my drivers licence.

I have no idea how it has affected my PN as I was already on it when I started getting PN. I would think that there are a lot of drugs like neurontin that seem to have fewer side effects than tegretol that you may want to try first.

Having said that I am very happy with tegretol and have no plans on going off it.

I have been taken it for about a month or so now. It seems to work very well for me. I take 100mg 2x per day plus a 200mg. I also take Imipramine. I don't now why but the two seem to work for me my burning feet pain level is down to a 1or2 on a scale of 1-10.:)

Trileptal yes that was it. My pain doc suggested that but I decided to try neurontin again first. My mom is on it for not pain but she also said it is less side effects then tegratol but you have to have your sodium level checked. My pain doc said it helps with some for pain. I don't know if you could ask about trileptal too if concerned about side effects. Many thoughts

I started Tegratol for burning stabbing pain.Works well but I take it when needed because of side effects.It causes the muscles in my legs to weaken.Crash another fall so I am careful on how much I take:eek:

I was prescribed Tegretol for the stabbing nerve pains of trigeminal neuralgia but to be honest, I don't think it helped me at all. I think my TN was due to MS, and I although I kept taking it during the attack, I think I got much more relief from Prednisolone when my doctor added that to my medications.

I'm on a similar anti-epileptic drug now called Sodium Valproate (Epilum) for chronic optic nerve pain, and I get limited pain relief from that one.
