Tuning Fork

Neurologist exam yesterday involved a tuning fork being placed on my ankle. I could feel the vibration for 9-10sec but forgot to ask what it all means? hope some one here can enlighten me.

I have alcoholic PN but he thinks I may be getting diabetes so back to the lab Monday for the fasting blood test

The tuning fork test--

--is to measure the sensory nerves that subsume the sensation of mechanical vibration, which are myelinated nerves that split off from major nerve trunks.

While the ability to feel the vibration of a tuning fork for long periods normally decreases with age, being able to feel it vibrate against you, and noticing the reduction in the vibration as the seconds pass, it usually a good sign.

Thanks a lot glen . My attempt at research shows that 10sec +or - 1 sec means normal I think.
But my feet and fingertips are numb (with pn pain). doesn't seem normal to me.

Hello,
Laying in bed I can tap my chest and feel the effects thru the legs and feet, also if a knife is dropped in the kitchen 20 feet away it sends a strong vibration thru my body.
