soft credit report?

 I went on my social security and started an acct. Today I got an email from ss that said this

Thank you for creating an online account with Social Security on 08/08/2013. You can log in any time to www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount with your username and password to access Social Security's online services.

Social Security may use an identity verification service provided by Experian to help verify your identity and protect your privacy when you register to do business with us online. When we make a verification request to establish your account, Experian may use information from your credit report to help verify your identity. As a result, you may see an entry called a "soft inquiry" on your Experian credit report. This will show an inquiry by the Social Security Administration with our address and the date of the request. Soft inquiries do not affect your credit score, and you do not incur any charges related to them. Soft inquiries are displayed in the version of the credit profile viewable only to consumers and are not reported to lenders. The soft inquiry will not appear on your credit report from Equifax or TransUnion, and will generally be removed from your Experian credit report after 25 months. Once you have registered for an online account, you will not generate additional soft inquiries by logging in to access our services.

I am on ssdi.....they said they are doing a soft credit report to make sure I am who I say who I am.....my issue is I had a couple of credits cards that I used for very small amts and have paid them off.

But my ex husband and I live together, we applied to refinance the house and I am listed as borrower and he co bowerer ..... he pays 2/3 of the mortgage payments and all of the utilities, they have my ssdi income on the forms, but is this going to hurt my ssdi benefits, my social security sight and I have the option of emailing them, should I? the mortgage company has us listed as married, but we divorced over 9 years ago, we just live together.

anything owed on repairs are listed in his name as paying, I am not on ssi, so I have assests and I payed off my car with some of that when found disabled because I knew I could not afford the pymts. ss for all the stupid questions:eek:

I found this, but it is not from a ss sight

A soft inquiry generally occurs when a prospective employer is conducting a background check. A soft inquiry also occurs when a creditor is pre-screening candidates for special offers. For example, all of those pre-approved credit card applications that come in the mail are generated from soft inquiries. Soft inquiries can occur without your consent or knowledge. If you pull your own credit report, this also shows as a soft inquiry. So they say for verification of who I am, will that be it? oh I panic over everything.

could this be what ss will do? it doesn't sound like it above...but know I don't trust social security

I have never heard of any type of credit report needed for SSDI. Maybe ??? for SSI but not for disability. I could be very wrong but I have never heard of it.

Checking your own credit report should not and does not count as an inquiry. Yes, employers and others may check your credit without contacting you. There was much to do over car dealerships checking your credit while you were on a test drive without telling you. I guess checking your credit might be something done by SSI but I don't think it is done with SSDI. Being disabled has nothing to do with your credit. Supplemental insurance SSI is a different story as it is based upon your financial need. I am NO authority on the subject, just my opinion. People with a lot more experience with "the system" can give you a much better response.

I was recently approved for SSD and I noticed that when I pulled my free annual credit report that there was an inquiry from Social Security. That inquiry was when I set up my online account. It is, like they said, just to verify you are who you say you are. I would not worry about it.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) specifies who can see your Equifax credit report. Businesses must have a "permissible purpose," as defined in the FCRA, to obtain your credit report. Employers or potential employers can only pull your credit report with your written permission....This is one of the things I did in my former job.

A soft pull is to check your address only, they won't look at your accounts, and don't care if you have negative history.

I was just worried about the mortgage, foolish of me.....tysm for responding, I can breathe again lol

I have just been so stressed since I messed up my short form, then I finally called soc sec crying and told them what I messed up on and she checked and said that a letter was being sent to me and they are not doing a full review they r just going to use what they have....which I did x the right boxes anyway.

in case no one has noticed, I panic just about everything

I am very behind the times on the regulations. As I mentioned, there was a big hula belu about car dealerships checking your credit without your permission while you were car shopping and test driving a vehicle. I guess it was "fixed" after all the commotion. Thanks for your info.
