Abscess on gum any connection to PN
 

I had a boil, abscess on my upper gum. I went to two different dentists and they said they couldn't see anything wrong with teeth on x-rays they took. The first dentist did prescribe antibiotics and infection went away. Both dentists advised me to go to endodontist. The nearest teeth were tooth no. 13 and 14. I actually saw the white puffy abscess with my own eyes.

I read that certain systemic diseases can cause boils on gum. Does it have any connection to PN? Should I go to a general MD?

I've been a registered dental assistant for 17 years. This is my advise:

You need to see a specialist. Either an endodontist or an oral surgeon. If any of your teeth in that area have had a root canal, then start with the endodontist. It could be a cracked root or a previous treated root canal could be reinfected. If you have a bump (abcess) on your gum it is due to an infection. Especially since the antibiotics cleared it up. You either have an infected tooth or a gum infection. It is not caused from a systemic disease, its caused by a local infection, gum or tooth. General dentists are not the best at diagnosisng these things,,,,,you need a specialist. A periodontist would be good too, but go to an endodonist first if you've had a previous root canal on any of the teeth in that area. Good luck.

P.S. Don't waste your time seeing an MD for this.....MD's know Nothing about teeth. And if it went away after the antibiotics it will come back again unless you have it treated by a dentist. Ususally when the x-ray looks ok but there is a gum boil its due to a cracked root. Cracked roots don't show up on the x-ray.

Thanks for reply. I did go to endodondist today and he could see nothing wrong. So I am guessing it was a gum abscess and not connected with a bad tooth.
