Hemp Hearts (seed)

I got a sample of this from our local organic store and was going to buy some but read it has too much Omega 6 and is not good? I am only sprinkling some on a salad every day. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this? I like the magnesium content and hope it adds a little protein too.

thanks

You can balance it with a flax oil capsule. It is the balance that matters.

Do you think hemp is worth taking? I really dislike flax seed, I think it tastes like I should be refinishing furniture with it, not eating it. :p Have also read it is inefficient to get Omega 3 from plant source and some people can't convert it very well anyhow?

Flax seed is good. I grind it as it would seem to me that it would not be good to try and eat the whole seeds. I have it every morning on my oatmeal. I eat it because I like it.

Here is a good site:

The ground form is easier to digest, etc.

Flaxoil comes in capsules. And the oil too of course.
They are not unpleasant. And in fact I used to make my own salad dressings with flax oil when my son was young and needed it. He loved it and sopped up the leavings with bread even. It has a nutty like flavor.

We use the NatureMade brand now. Flax is the essential beginning Omega-3.... it is metabolized into many things, including long chain Omegas EPA and DHA. Women do this pretty well, because we have babies who need the EPA and esp the DHA to develop their nervous systems.

Males however are much less efficient in conversion.

Thank you both, I can get Nature Made easily so will try some or see if I can find a small amount of seed to try. I think I tried some of my sisters flax seed and it tasted like linseed oil to me which is understandable because linseed is made from flax. Maybe if I try it again and remember how good it is for me it will seem better. I really liked the hemp hearts, they were nutty.

Flax seed often goes rancid very quickly... We only did the capsules and the pour type oil for flax.

damaged omega 6

Also they are starting to think the problem is damaged omega 6 (such as seed oils in high eat, animals feed grain who should be eating grass, etc), more than omega 6 from good food sources.

I also make salad dressing from flax oil. People love it. Just a basic flax oil, raw apple cider vinegar dressing. I can add various herbs, other ingredients from there.

A very good point about rancid oil.
When buying, the oil should be refrigerated at the store. Watch expiration dates on bottles.

As soon as I open a bottle, I drop in 2-3 caps of vitamin E.

I keep ground flax seed in a jar in the refrigerator if it's been opened. I use about a tablespoon on my oatmeal every morning.

The unopened box (extra) is kept in the freezer. I have never had a problem with it.
