Infected Root Canal ..
I have an old crown with root canal that has become infected. I hadn't gotten connected with a dentist since moving to town but had to find a place when I started having severe pain this week. Its a generic dental place, they were great about getting me in right away, took xrays and said the crown with root canal would need to be removed. I have a metabolic disorder and unable to take pain medications and have trouble with most antibiotics. I have been using hot and cold packs to try and get the pain minimized. Been taking the liquid amoxicillin in small doses and hoping I don't have a reaction before I can get benefit from it. My concern is whether this generic practice can handle a root canal/crown removal or is there some place that might be a better choice for that procedure. Thank you for any help

Hi attegirl,
Ideally an oral surgeon is more knowledgeable and experienced in extracting root canaled teeth. Just be sure to request that he remove the periodontal ligament and any diseased tissue and bone when he extracts the tooth. This will help minimize post op complications and infection. Those surgical steps are imperative and should be done automatically but sometimes they are not. So in an assertive but kind and matter of fact way, it is up to the patient to just make it clear that they want them done. It is best to have the tooth removed while you are still on the antibiotic as that will help lower the inflammation and make the local anesthetic work more profoundly. As for the pain meds..... you can take homeopathic remedies instead of prescription drugs. Arnica montana pellets can be very helpful in relieving pain both before and after the extraction. Here is a great guide to follow for arnica usage: http://www.dr-forsyth.com/Dr_Charles...th/Arnica.html Please let us know how you're doing. Bryanna Quote:
