Surgery.......and MG
 

Hi,
I was to the gyn this past week and she discovered a cyst outwardly., she gave me a local (which did nothing) and made a incision ( which I felt ) and tried to remove the cyst , it was very moveable and after 40 minutes decided that she would stitch me up and I will need to have surgery. Lets not mention that I have been sitting on ice packs all week. I told her I have MG,and she asked if I have ever had surgery I advised none since diagnosed., but I definately know I have ocular., and I think some generalized but I have my appointment coming up with a specialist. So if I do have to have surgery, what would the effects be with the MG, if any?

If you are to have surgery, you definitevely have to inform the anesthetist and the surgeon that you have MG and mention the medication you follow. That will allow them to select the appropriate products for the anasthesia and the antibiotics.
Make sure also that they know something about MG by mentioning that some products are formally prohibited in your case…

Whenever I had surgery they did Plasma Exchange before, talk to your neuro about this. You must also let all involved with the surgery know about your MG.

Talk with your Neuro about the antibiotics he would like you to use, after the surgery, they do effect MG, some are better than others for us !

Ditto on what these guys said. Sorry you have to have surgery. They can use pediatric gas to intubate, if they have to do that. It's better than using a muscle relaxant.

Any surgery can make MG worse. And if they use morphine for pain, your breathing could take a nosedive. They may have to temporarily.

I'm so sorry to hear about the cyst - that stinks! :(

Make sure EVERYONE knows you have MG, as you MAY have a reaction to the anethesia....you can never be too sure. I was intubated during my surgery as well as shortly thereafter, so please do not be afraid if you wake up that way. They are just making sure you are able to breathe on your own.

Other than that, how are you? Are you feeling better @ all?
