If you could help me...

Hello, I am new to this site. I came here because I have MS but see that there is so much on this site, it's wonderful. My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea. He refuses to get the machine that he should have. He did loose weight and his snoring stopped. He has since gained the weight back because his back is such a mess (DDD and arthritis). He still refuses to do anything about his sleep apnea. Nothing I say can convince him to take this seriously, and I am very scared. Has anyone been in this situation? Does anyone have an advice on what I can say to get him to listen to me?

Hi, Karousel.

As someone who has sleep apnea all I can say is it's so important for him to use a CPAP, consistantly. If he wants to loose weight, great! But, he needs to do that while he becomes proactive with the CPAP.

Does your husband realize he could lose weight easier if he used the CPAP? He would feel less tired, get a more restorative sleep and end up with more energy. Sleep apnea can actually cause a person to gain weight - the less REM sleep he gets the more "sluggish" he will feel.....day after day.

I will be perfectly honest - I hate using the CPAP but, I have more energy and in a months time I lost 8 pounds - all because I now have the ability to "move."

My goal is to get off the CPAP....in time and when I truly don't need it by the proof of a sleep study.

I really hope you can convince your DH he needs to use the CPAP - for his health and life.

Send him here and I'll talk to him :D

Snoopy, thank you! I will talk again with my husband and stress those things you have said. His loosing weight will take quite some time since he can't exercise because of his back. That's why I keep telling him he needs to get that machine. Thank you for telling the name of it! He has been very sluggish and lethargic and it is getting worse every day. His health is not very good and I'm so afraid. We have a "date" on Saturday night so I'll bring it up then if he's in a good mood! Wish me luck.

karousel,

I will agree with Snoopy, since I started using my CRAP I feel better. It my DH tells me I hardly even move when I am asleep.

Thank you Darlene for your response. Maybe with more pushing, he'll give in and do what the doctors are telling him to!

Did you talk to your husband, Karousel? Is he going to take the advice of his doctor and use a CPAP?

If he doesn't use a CPAP he will only become more and more lethargic and sluggish. By the time I mention the fatigue to my doctor the fatigue had become a quality of life issue. In my case I had been blaming the fatigue on the MS, not a good thing.

I am still trying to "catch up" on everything that needed to get done but I was not capable of doing. I haven't been exercising but the weight is still coming off.
