Food for the bipolar:

Hi,

This research shows that Probiotics can improve mood and lower anxiety.

http://www.landesbioscience.com/jour...article/16108/

Beneficial psychological effects of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in healthy human volunteers

Quote:

In a recent clinical study, we demonstrated in the general population that Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 (PF) taken in combination for 30 days decreased the global scores of hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADs), and the global severity index of the Hopkins symptoms checklist (HSCL-90), due to the decrease of the sub-scores of somatization, depression and anger-hostility spheres.

Therefore, oral intake of PF showed beneficial effects on anxiety and depression related behaviors in human volunteers.

Pumpkin seeds for anxiety

The True Potency Of The Pumpkin Seed

Quote:

A study published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology revealed that tryptophan, an amino acid abundant in pumpkin seeds, might help alleviate anxiety.

Since tryptophan is converted to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that enhances mood and promotes well-being in the brain, researchers investigated whether consuming a tryptophan rich food could boost serotonin levels and reduce anxiety symptoms.

They discovered that subjects with anxiety disorder who consumed tryptophan rich gourd seeds with carbohydrates before an anxiety test experienced greater improvements in subjective and objective measures on the Endler Multidimensional Anxiety Scale compared with those who consumed only carbohydrates.18

I have a really good probiotics in my cuppard, I just can't seem to be able to time them right. supposed to take them on an empty stomach. I am supposed to take my night time meds 45 minutes before bed if I did that then I could take the probiotic then right before sleep. I just have not been able to remember to take them the 45 minutes before bed. usually it is right before sleep. And really is 45 minutes enough time to really be on an empty stomach?
sigh
they are supposed to be so good for us!

Hi, Bizi,

Maybe try a different brand with different instructions. Mine says to take with food.

I do not remember to take it but I take it more than half the time.

yep mine says it is best to take it on an empty stomach.
I just bought this expensive bottle. I was drinking kefir yogurt drink at night, same thing 4 oz on an empty stomach. I did that last year I think.
how long do you think I could wait to take it after my night meds?
do you think an hour would be long enough?

Bizi,

This is what Livestrong says:

http://www.livestrong.com/article/50...-without-food/
HOW TO TAKE THEM
Quote:

It is most beneficial to take probiotics just before or just after a meal, according to Serenity Aberdour, a naturopathic doctor.
The acids in your stomach can impede absorption of the probiotics.
The ideal time is after a meal, when the pH balance of your stomach is at its highest and acidity is at its lowest.
This allows more of the probiotic supplement to reach your intestine.
Apparently, you want to take them before or after a meal ---
--- (in other words, around the time of a meal).
(Do not take them at the same time as food.)
According to this, 45 minutes is good so one hour is fine.)

thank you so much. I was also trying to avoid them around my meds but maybe I don't need to worry about that.

Bizi,

Right.

You do not need to worry about the probiotics and the meds.
