Lyrica+wfluid retention?

Hi everyone
I had been taking Lyrica since around feb/march of this year.
I had been feeling better than i had in a VERY long time!
About 4-5 weeks ago my feet started hurting,so of course i took my socks and checked them out.I couldn't even see my ankle bone!
I was also having lower back problems,so i thought i should go get checked out.
I was told my liver enzymes were raised and to stop taking the Lyrica!
I have been inMISERY ever since.
I feel like i had when all this first started 3-4 yrs ago!!
I hurt all day long!!!!
My feet are still retaining fluid, but not as bad.
I was wondering if anyone here had experienced this, also how long before it can possibly clear up?
I wasn't put on water pills or anything.I'm basically being shuffled between 2 docs that seem fed up with me!!
So nothing has been done yet.I really wanna go back on the Lyrica, but they say wait, even though nothing is being done about the retention.
I am going to see a neurosurgeon on the 11th.I guess they are hopin he will take over!
Fed up with doctors...Kell

Lyrica does not raise liver enzymes.

It is excreted whole in the urine. 90% I could not find anything in the literature on liver effects.

Edema is common with it however.
You can have pain and aching with edema.

Pregabalin pharmacology and its relevance to clinical practice.
Ben-Menachem E.

Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Sahlgrenska Academy, Göteborg University, Göteborg, Sweden. Elinor.Ben-Menachem@neuro.gu.se

Pregabalin is a potent ligand for the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system that exhibits potent anticonvulsant, analgesic, and anxiolytic activity in a range of animal models. In addition, pregabalin has been shown to be a highly effective adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in clinical trials. Potent binding to the alpha-2-delta site reduces depolarization-induced calcium influx with a consequential modulation in excitatory neurotransmitter release. Pregabalin has no demonstrated effects on GABAergic mechanisms. Pregabalin demonstrates highly predictable and linear pharmacokinetics, a profile that makes it easy to use in clinical practice. Absorption is extensive, rapid, and proportional to dose. Time to maximal plasma concentration is approximately 1 h and steady state is achieved within 24-48 h. These characteristics reflect the observed onset of efficacy as early as day two in clinical trials. High bioavailability, a mean elimination half life (t(1/2)) of 6.3 h, and dose-proportional maximal plasma concentrations and total exposures predict a dose-response relationship in clinical practice and allow an effective starting dose of 150 mg/day in clinical practice without need for titration. Administration with food has no clinically relevant effect on the amount of pregabalin absorbed, providing for a dosing regimen uncomplicated by meals. Pregabalin does not bind to plasma proteins and is excreted virtually unchanged (<2% metabolism) by the kidneys. It is not subject to hepatic metabolism and does not induce or inhibit liver enzymes such as the cytochrome P450 system. Therefore, pregabalin is unlikely to cause, or be subject to, pharmacokinetic drug-drug interactions--an expectation that has been confirmed in clinical pharmacokinetic studies. However, dose adjustment may be necessary in patients with renal insufficiency. Thus, the pharmacological and pharmacokinetic profiles of pregabalin provide a predictable basis for its use in clinical practice.

Other meds?

Hi Kell-
I was wondering if you had ever tried neurontin, topamax, or zonegran? If you are being prescribed the lyrica for pain, these other meds have similar modes of action, being that they all increase the levels of GABA in the CNS. And PNS for that matter! My fav amongst all of these is probably topamax- I've had the least side effects on that one. I've switched through all of these over the years trying to find the least side effects and least grogginess. Maybe one of these could be a replacement for the lyrica with fewer problems.

Thank you for your replies!
I have tried it all Lynn!!
This one worked the absolute best for my nerve pain..
I'm gonna try taking water pills/with potassium..Once i have the ok from one of my docs...
Have a good week<3

Me too Kell

Kell,
I am suffering from fluid retention in my legs and it's probably from my Lyrica. To combat this, my rheumie put me on Lasic every other day and it's a small dose. He has me eat a banana every night too.

just a reminder...

Lasix depletes THIAMINE.... which can lead to more edema (a vicious circle) and other unsavory effects.

So make sure you are taking at least a B-50 complex with it. Or thiamine alone.
This is not expensive and will save you much grief.

(this happened to me).

Kelley I had to stop Lyrica last week due to terrible swelling too. I am so sad to see it go, due to pain issues and yet my mind is so much clearer, and my leg stopped hurting. I still have some slight swelling in my left ankle and am sure it will go away soon.
I think one of my best bets is to try and lose my excessive weight. UCK! I know it is not the whole answer, yet know that it sure would help with trying to drag around a painful body, wearing plus sizes. Gaye

I agree with the b complex and would also suggest lemon juice in water with honey to taste... For Mom I use one tablespoon lemon juice to 8 oz of water...

I am currently on a very very low dose of Lyrica cousin Neurontin( 100mg) and I have been doing the lemon juice..

as for liver enzymes raising doesnt surprise me but I would think the kidneys would be the strain if 90% is urinated out... the 10 might not metabolize right in the liver causeing the upped enzymes... no fun I have to deal with Liver issues with my dog

When I was still on Lyrica I suffered from various side effects. The worst were weight gain, bloating & swelling. After I stopped taking Lyrica those side effects slowly went away.

Missed this....

thanks Mrs. D.
I somehow missed your answer to this. I've added thiamine to my daily supplements now.
